Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 Launches Commemorative Coin Production

The Osaka Mint begins producing gold and silver coins featuring the expo's mascot Myakumyaku, capturing the spirit of the upcoming event.

On March 3, 2025, the production of commemorative coins celebrating the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 commenced at the Osaka Mint. These coins, adorned with the expo's official character, Myakumyaku, represent the first of their kind related to the event. With the recent surge in gold prices, each 10,000 yen gold coin is set to retail for 268,000 yen.

The launch ceremony at the Osaka Mint featured prominent figures, including former sumo wrestler Minakawa Oyakata, known as Takakesho, and architect Sou Fujimoto, who created the venue's signature large roof ring. The ceremony witnessed members from the Kansai Economic Federation, headed by Chairman Masayoshi Matsumoto, simultaneously pressing buttons to initiate the minting process.

Upon the activation of the coin press, the coins began to emerge, and Takakesho expressed his astonishment: "Seeing the actual coins is completely different," he remarked, showcasing the excitement surrounding the event.

The minted coins include the 10,000 yen gold variety along with 1,000 yen silver coins, also featuring Myakumyaku. The silver coin showcases Myakumyaku alongside the dream island of Yumeshima, complete with a rainbow, along with hidden features revealed upon light exposure, displaying the word "EXPO."
Yet, it's not just the designs sparking interest—also noteworthy is the coin's premium pricing, justified by the rising materials costs and the advanced techniques employed during production.

These commemorative coins serve as more than mere currency; they embody cultural significance, and their demand is anticipated to be high. The selling prices surpass their nominal values due to these factors, with the gold coin priced at 268,000 yen and the silver coin at 15,200 yen.

The application process for purchasing these commemorative coins begins on March 6, with selections made through a lottery system. Successful applicants can expect their coins to be shipped starting from June of this year.

Takakesho also shared his perspectives on the expo, stating, "The expo offers a great opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the world and Japan. It will feature sumo performances, attracting many visitors." This perspective emphasizes the expo's commitment to showcasing both cultural heritage and innovation.

To date, this marks the third issuance of commemorative coins for the Osaka-Kansai Expo, with previous designs laid as groundwork for this final release. The international showcase is expected to not only highlight local culture but also bring attention to innovative projects and contribute to local and national pride.

The Osaka-Kansai Expo is slated to open next month, and with this latest development concerning the commemorative coins, anticipation is building. The event promises to be both celebratory and reflective, allowing participants and visitors alike to partake not only in festivities but also to engage with Japan's heritage as they witness the celebration of global unity.
