Osaka Stock Exchange Begins New Year With Tradition And Expo Hopes

Ceremony unites trading and celebration as expectations rise for the 2025 World Expo.

The Osaka Stock Exchange kicked off the new trading year on January 6, 2025, with its traditional New Year opening ceremony, known as "大発会" (Daihatsukai). This annual event is not only significant for traders but also serves as a platform to bolster regional morale and prepare for the upcoming 2025 World Expo, which is just around 100 days away.

Held at the Osaka Stock Exchange located in central Osaka, the ceremony saw the attendance of various dignitaries, including Ryusuke Yokoyama, the president of the Osaka Stock Exchange, along with representatives from the Imamiya Ebisu Shrine and the Expo's official mascot, Myakumyaku. Their participation helped underline the collective spirit required for the region's economic development as the World Expo nears.

Traditionally, the opening ceremony features ceremonial blessings from 福娘 (fuku musume) of the Imamiya Ebisu Shrine, promoting prosperity for the year. This year's gathering included about 100 members from the market who engaged in the ritualistic "大株締め" (daikabu shime), which involves hitting wooden blocks together, chanting "打~ちましょ、もひとつせ、祝(い)おうて三度," alongside the fuku musume’s guidance.

Despite the festivities, trading commenced on a somber note, with the Nikkei index showing a decline of over 400 points right from the opening bell. This downturn contrasted starkly with the previous year’s performance, where the Nikkei had reached its highest closing value in 35 years. Nonetheless, Yokoyama and other leaders are optimistic about the connection between the event and the anticipated influx of investments associated with the Expo.

"万博の成功に向けて協力し、関西経済の発展に一層尽力していく" ("We will work collaboratively for the success of the Expo and strive for the development of the Kansai economy"), remarked Ryusuke Yokoyama as he addressed the attendees. His statement reflects the overarching sentiment of anticipation surrounding the Expo, as it is expected to attract significant business and tourist activity to the region.

Hiroyuki Ishige, Secretary-General of the Japan International Expo Association, echoed similar sentiments, explaining, "万博は外交の場でもあり、世界中から多くの要人が訪れる。これは大きなビジネスチャンスだ" ("The Expo is also a diplomatic venue where many dignitaries from around the world will visit. This is a great business opportunity"). His remarks highlight the strategic importance of the Expo for local businesses and the potential international collaborations it could engender.

Looking forward, the Osaka Exchange's leadership is not just focused on the Expo but is also planning to introduce new financial products, marking the continuation of innovation within the market. With new items listed for two consecutive years preceding 2025, the Exchange aims to maintain this momentum. Yokoyama hinted at more new products being considered for rollout, aiming to reach record trading volumes within the year.

Overall, the atmosphere at the 2025 Osaka Stock Exchange's New Year opening was one of cautious optimism. The traditional practices observed serve to remind participants of the community’s resilience and the economic potential poised to be unlocked through the forthcoming World Expo. With the eyes of the world set on Osaka, the city is hopeful for substantial growth and opportunities arising from this high-profile event.
