Ortuzar Resigns As PNV Leader, Esteban Set To Succeed

The PNV faces potential renewal as Aitor Esteban is poised to take charge following Ortuzar's resignation amid internal party divisions.

Andoni Ortuzar, the long-standing president of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), has announced his decision to step down and not seek re-election, paving the way for Aitor Esteban, the party’s spokesman in the Spanish Congress, to take over the leadership role.

On Thursday, Ortuzar shared his announcement through social media, stating he will not proceed to the second round of the party’s internal election process for the presidency of the Euzkadi Buru Batzar (EBB). He emphasized this choice was “long contemplated,” and expressed gratitude for the support he received during the first round of voting.

Ortuzar, who has been at the helm of the PNV since January 2013, cited increasing internal divisions within the party as one of the major factors for his decision. Following the first round of voting, which saw low participation, he emerged as the leading candidate alongside Esteban, who had garnered significant support from party members dissatisfied with Ortuzar's tenure. The results underscored the stark division within the PNV’s ranks, with Ortuzar winning approximately 110 voting assemblies and Esteban securing around 70.

“In light of the results and the evolution of this first round, I believe I must reconsider my position and return to my initial conviction, which was to make way for renewal,” Ortuzar wrote. “There is another candidacy with sufficient ambition to assume the presidency of the EBB.”

His departure from the contention is seen as a necessary measure to prevent the PNV from fragmenting, as internal strife could jeopardize the party’s future, particularly with upcoming municipal elections and the ever-looming challenge from EH Bildu.

Imanol Pradales, the Basque Premier, had expressed confidence just hours before Ortuzar’s announcement, affirming his belief the PNV would emerge from this transition “stronger and united.” Following Ortuzar’s resignation, Esteban publicly acknowledged it as a “generous” act from a friend, expressing gratitude for Ortuzar’s years of service.

Esteban now stands poised to ascend to the presidency, yet he must negotiate with Markel Olano, another candidate who also participated in the first round of voting, to secure his position. Olano, representing the third faction within the party, is thought to be ready to step aside.

Throughout his tenure as PNV president, Ortuzar maintained significant influence, leading the party through various internal and external challenges. He highlighted the necessity for unity within the PNV, stating, “The time has come for unity, and it is what I believe I must promote now.”

His recognition of the need for change is echoed by Esteban, who made it clear he holds the desire to lead the party toward addressing new challenges for future generations. “If I am elected president, I will give my best for the party to tackle new challenges demanded by this new century,” he stated.

Despite Ortuzar’s significant victories during his dual terms, which included strengthening the party’s representation, there have been increasing voices advocating for generational renewal. Ortuzar’s resignation indicates not just the practicalities of party politics but also the emotional weight of leadership change within the PNV. Esteban’s likely presidency symbolizes not only continuity but potential renewal for the PNV, representing the interests of those seeking change.

“I want to thank all those who have shown me their personal support,” Ortuzar concluded his communication. “I hope you understand my decision as one made for the party’s future.”

While the announcement signifies new beginnings for the PNV, it leaves open questions about how the party will forge unity and continue to navigate the demanding political environment of the Basque Country. The next steps will be closely watched by supporters and critics alike, as Esteban prepares to step forward to meet these challenges head-on.
