Born Ivan Ushakov in 1718, in the village of Burnakovo, Yaroslavl province, Feodor made significant sacrifices to follow his calling. At just twenty years old, he forsook his promising military career as a guards officer, choosing instead the path of a hermit, dedicated to serving God.
Feodor’s life took a pivotal turn on December 13, 1762, when he was tonsured as a monk, embracing the monastic life with fervor. His devotion led him to become the abbot of Sanaksar Monastery, located three versts from the town of Temnikov, along the serene banks of the Moksha River. It is here, amid the challenges of monastic life, he restored the monastery's former glory after it had fallen to disrepair.
The Sanaksar Monastery was once dilapidated, with its church and buildings crumbling due to neglect. Feodor, recognized for his virtue and dedication, received assistance from benefactors who admired his resolve. His leadership style was both firm and fair, devoting daily lengthy hours to prayer and service, with some days extending beyond ten hours. Under his guidance, the monastery flourished and regained its purpose as a sanctuary of peace and worship.
Despite these achievements, Feodor faced formidable challenges, including exile. A wrongful denunciation by Temnikov's governor led to his arrest and subsequent banishment to the Solovetsky Monastery, where he endured nearly nine years of harsh conditions. Even under duress, his spirit remained undeterred, and the sister community from the Sanaksar Monastery provided support, cherishing his role as their beloved mentor.
Feodor was eventually liberated, thanks to the intercession of Metropolitan Gavriil of St. Petersburg and the decree of Empress Catherine II. He returned to Sanaksar, where he continued his relentless work for the Lord until his passing on the night of February 19, 1791, at the age of 73.
After his death, the community honored Feodor’s legacy by encapsulating his life’s work on his gravestone. The inscription reads, “Here lies the 73-year-old elder hieromonk Feodor, by birth Ushakov, restorer of the Sanaksar monastery, who was tonsured at Alekseevo-Nevsky Lavra and continued the monastic life for 45 years; died of all true signs of a Christian and good monk on February 19, 1791.” This somber yet respectful tribute reflects the esteem he garnered throughout his life.
