Orihuela Hosts 25th Annual Medieval Market

Celebration unites history, culture, and community amusement for all ages.

Orihuela is set to ring in its 25th Annual Medieval Market, celebrating over two decades of captivating festivities. Running from February 28 to March 2, this year's event promises to be extra special, marking not just the passage of time, but the heart of the historic city itself.

Councilor Rocío Ortuño officially announced this year’s market, which is traditionally one of the most anticipated events on Orihuela’s calendar. "This year we have a very special edition: 25 years of history of this amazing event, which each year attracts thousands of visitors from different cities," Ortuño remarked. She emphasized the importance of the celebration happening during the peak tourist season, attracting both locals and visitors eager to immerse themselves in the medieval atmosphere.

The medieval festivities kick off on February 28, with the opening ceremony scheduled for 11:30 AM at Plaza de Santiago. Historically rooted, the event reflects Orihuela’s rich cultural heritage, where visitors stroll through themed areas featuring Jewish, Christian, and Arab influences. While the market has been hosted at the beginning of February for years, this special anniversary leads to its relocation to early March, allowing even more enthusiasts to participate.

On March 1, starting at 11:00 AM, attendees will gather for the traditional Armengola parade, welcoming the 2024 Armengola, Loli Sánchez, who will read the ceremonial proclamation at the city hall. The concluding parade, marking the end of the market, takes place on March 2 at 8:00 PM, providing visitors with yet another picturesque culmination of medieval merriment.

This celebration is not just about nostalgia; it includes dynamic performances, workshops, craft stalls, and plenty of traditional food options. The local Association of Moros y Cristianos will also establish themed taverns to add to the event's authenticity. For those with dietary concerns, the market again will feature a gluten-free tavern, coordinated with the Association of Celiacs of the Valencian Community, located at Plaza de la Soledad.

No festival would be complete without beautiful arrays of entertainment, and this year’s market will feature music and stage performances, all redesigned to provide attendees with the best possible experience. One notable area will be the “City of Witches” at Plaza de Santiago, blending fun with the local lore, truly stepping back to medieval times.

To make the event more accessible, special parking zones will be available, with park-and-ride services ensuring ease for attendees who drive from afar. These areas are strategically located behind key community landmarks to facilitate smoother access to the festivities.

Committing to safety and inclusivity, the municipality has set up the Purple Information Point. Managed by professionals from the Equality Department, this initiative provides a safe space for anyone seeking guidance or assistance throughout the event.

Highlighting the remarkable community spirit, Councilor of Tourism and Coast, Manuel Mestre, expressed his enthusiasm to connect travelers with this unique cultural experience, stating, "We want the coastal residents to enjoy this medieval event to the fullest." To accommodate coastal residents, free buses will operate throughout the weekend, linking Orihuela Costa to the city center. Departing from Playa Flamenca at 11:00 AM and returning from Orihuela at 6:00 PM, these accessible buses aim to encourage broad participation.

To reserve spots on the buses, interested persons must sign up through the official tourism website or directly at the local tourism office, as spaces are limited. This year promises not just to revisit the past, but to celebrate it, with new experiences awaiting all who attend.

Participants are encouraged to fully engage with the festivities and contribute to the vibrant atmosphere. Whether wandering through stalls laden with medieval crafts or enjoying live performances, Orihuela’s Medieval Market is sure to be the highlight of the late winter season. Mark your calendars and prepare to immerse yourself in the enchanting world of the past!
