UK-based orbital launch services provider Orbex has announced its latest customer agreement with D-Orbit, a leading name in space logistics and transportation. This partnership, revealed on February 3, marks another significant milestone for Orbex as it prepares for commercial launch operations.
Under the terms of the agreement, D-Orbit will secure access to two launches aboard Orbex’s micro-launcher, Orbex Prime, over the next three years. D-Orbit’s expertise lies in space logistics services, which include transportation of satellites once they are in orbit, deploying them to precise orbital slots, and testing hosted payloads. The company also provides satellite operators with the necessary storage capacity and advanced computing capabilities during their time in orbit.
Orbex is recognized as one of the key players developing advanced, low-carbon, high-performance micro-launchers. Its inaugural launch is expected to happen from SaxaVord Spaceport, where Orbex has established dedicated launch facilities with capabilities to conduct up to 10 flights annually.
"We are very pleased to have signed this agreement with Orbex, which strengthens our commitment to the thriving UK space ecosystem," said Jonathan Firth, Chief Corporate Development Officer at D-Orbit. He added, "Orbex Prime’s missions will provide valuable insights and expand our portfolio of orbital launch solutions. It’s truly an exciting time to be part of the UK space industry, and we look forward to contributing to its growth and innovation.”
Orbex is racing to complete the development of its two-stage Prime rocket, which is slated to carry payloads up to 180 kilograms to low Earth orbit. The inaugural flight is scheduled for late 2025. Interestingly, no specific details concerning D-Orbit’s intended payloads for the upcoming launches were disclosed, leaving much to speculation.
Highlighting Orbex’s rising profile, the company was named as one of the rideshare providers for the European Commission’s ambitious Initiatives on Orbit Demonstration and Validation (IOD/IOV) programme. This initiative, launched in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), aims to support various organizations by validating innovative technologies, accelerating their progression to market.
Orbex’s recent contract with D-Orbit arrives shortly after the UK government granted the company £20 million ($24.76 million) to bolster its operational infrastructure. This announcement, following the deal, amplifies the speculation about the effectiveness of governmental support for private launch systems. Matt Archer, the UK Space Agency Director of Launch, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, "This agreement demonstrates the growing commercial interest in UK launch, as we count down to the first rockets lifting off from SaxaVord Spaceport."
With continued support from the UK Space Agency, Archer expressed optimism about Orbex’s future, acknowledging their position as leading contributors to sustainable spaceflight. "The technology D-Orbit provides will advance the efficiency and sustainability of satellite missions. This partnership strengthens our goal to create jobs, growth, and innovation across the sector," he added.
Although specific financial details of the partnership remained undisclosed, the growing collaboration between Orbex and D-Orbit emphasizes the potential for innovative solutions within the UK’s space sector. These activities not only aim to advance technological achievements but also bring economic benefits and employment opportunities.
Phil Chambers, CEO of Orbex, also voiced his enthusiasm about the agreement, stating, "Our primary goal is to support the European space industry by offering flexible and sustainable satellite launch options direct from the UK. This agreement not only validates our technological advancements but also demonstrates the trust commercial operators place in our plans."
With launch capabilities and contracts continuing to materialize, the future looks bright for Orbex and D-Orbit, each paving the way for more sustainable and efficient pathways to satellite deployment and logistical management.
Orbex is dedicated to aligning its plans with the growing needs of the space market, innovatively providing launch solutions and contributing significantly to the UK space industry. With the steadfast commitment of both companies, the partnership is set to expand horizons and facilitate novel opportunities for advancements within the sector.
