Operation Nez Rouge is celebrating its 41st season of safe rides, marking another year of commitment to reducing drunk driving during the holiday festivities. According to Marilyn Vigneault, the organization’s general director, reports suggest the demand for this cherished service remains high. The operation, which runs until December 31, 2024, continues to engage volunteers and community support across various regions of Quebec.
Vigneault revealed during her interview on the show Toujours le matin how busy the first three weekends have been for Operation Nez Rouge. Across regions including Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec, 704 rides were provided, highlighting the initiative’s role as not just about safety but also about community involvement—since, as she noted, “It’s rare to escort just one person; more often, multiple riders are taken home safely.”
Survey results indicate substantial support among Quebecois for the service’s role in changing attitudes toward alcohol consumption. Vigneault remarked, “A change of mindset is something deeply rooted and takes time. It's hard to change mentalities... This feedback gives us the encouragement we need to continue our awareness mission.”
Operation Nez Rouge is more than just a ride service; it also serves as a fundraiser for various local charities, which greatly enhances its appeal and purpose. Vigneault adds, “By making our roads safer, you’re also contributing to local organizations. It’s truly a win-win.”
The coordinated effort does not go unnoticed, with scores of volunteers stepping up to assist, especially during peak nights like December 20 and 21, when 29 volunteers worked diligently to provide rides. Patrick Labrie, the coordinator for Haut-Richelieu, expressed satisfaction with the year’s progress. “Everything is going very well. We see the volunteers enjoying their time with our team,” he noted.
“For the remaining nights of Operation Nez Rouge on December 24, 27, 28, and 31, we expect over 100 volunteers to be ready to lend their support,” Labrie added, encouraging those interested to join through their online portal where more information is provided on volunteering opportunities and schedules.
The operation functions nightly from 9:30 PM to 3:00 AM, with users encouraged to utilize their services by calling the central hotline or through the dedicated mobile application. Participants are reminded to notify the hotline if they no longer require rides, as this helps streamline the process and keeps resources ready for those who do need support.
Operation Nez Rouge extends its reach across different communities to make sure everyone has access to safe transportation during the holiday season. Volunteers and participants alike enjoy the sense of community and safety facilitated by this program. “We have volunteers of all ages, including scouts and their families, who join the effort,” said Labrie, underscoring the importance of community involvement.
So whether you're celebrating New Year's Eve or just enjoying holiday festivities, be sure to keep Operation Nez Rouge’s services on your radar. It’s not only about getting home safely. Every ride contributes to communal support and positive social change.
