OpenAI Launches Deep Research Tool Powered By New AI Models

OpenAI has taken a significant leap forward by launching its new ‘Deep Research’ feature alongside the latest reasoning model, o3. Designed for users with ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro subscriptions, the Deep Research feature empowers individuals to synthesize information and execute multi-step research tasks efficiently. Users can provide prompts, such as how the retail industry has changed over the past three years, and expect the tool to return structured data, including bullet points and tables, along with their own data integrated seamlessly.

The process begins when users input their queries. The ChatGPT-based AI analyses numerous internet sources to verify information as it compiles reports. Depending on the complexity of the task, it may take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to generate responses. Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, enthused about the capabilities of Deep Research, stating, "Deep research is OpenAI's next agent... you give it a prompt, and ChatGPT will find, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst."

This latest tool is powered by the o3 model, which OpenAI previewed last December and is said to synthesize responses with accuracy and clarity, enhancing its reasoning ability. Another notable introduction from OpenAI is the o3-mini, optimized for web browsing, and data analysis with reduced latency compared to its predecessor, o1-mini. This smaller model retains strong reasoning functions and is now available to free-tier users as well.

The o3-mini model supports streaming and provides developers with options for low, medium, and high reasoning efforts to optimize for specific tasks. "This flexibility allows o3-mini to ‘think harder’ when tackling complex challenges or prioritize speed when latency is of utmost concern," OpenAI explained. For developers focusing on speed, o3-mini is particularly advantageous for STEM-related tasks where real-time responses are necessary.

To access these cutting-edge tools, OpenAI users will need to subscribe to either ChatGPT Pro, which costs $200 per month, or other higher-tier plans. Users will still find themselves limited monthly to queries based on their pay tiers, with Deep Research exhibiting high compute requirements. OpenAI cautioned users of constraints, noting, "Deep research is not cheap to run or to use," but the cost and restrictions reflect the expansive technological demands of AI.
