Online Scams Surge As Fraudulent Sales Rise

Authorities warn against high-profit online schemes and social media scams

As online businesses continue to grow, so do the scams associated with them. A recent surge in fraudulent online sales schemes has left many individuals vulnerable to deception, particularly those seeking easy income opportunities. According to Báo Công An Nghệ An, these scams often involve perpetrators impersonating employees of reputable e-commerce platforms like Lazada, Shopee, and Tiki, luring victims with promises of high profits and commissions.

Victims are typically asked to complete fake orders and pay in advance to receive commissions that range from 10% to 20% per order. Initially, scammers will pay the principal and commission for the first few transactions to gain trust. However, as the victims become more involved, the scammers shift tactics, employing methods such as incorrect order codes or operational errors to seize the victims' assets.

In light of these alarming trends, the article advises individuals to be cautious and avoid participating in any online schemes that promise high returns. It emphasizes the importance of not providing personal information, such as ID numbers or bank account details, and warns against clicking on links from unknown sources.

Moreover, the article highlights the increasing prevalence of spam calls and phone scams, which have become more sophisticated over the years. MobiFone, a major telecommunications provider, has recognized the need for enhanced security measures to protect its customers from these threats. The company has implemented a SPAMCALL system that utilizes Big Data and artificial intelligence to monitor and prevent spam calls effectively.

This innovative system analyzes calling behavior to identify and block suspicious numbers, thereby safeguarding customers from unwanted disturbances. In addition, MobiFone has integrated spam call blocking features into its My MobiFone app, allowing users to activate options like "Warning of spam calls" and "Block spam calls" with just a few clicks.

To further assist users, MobiFone has developed MobiPA, a virtual assistant designed to handle incoming calls on behalf of subscribers. When customers are unable to answer, MobiPA can receive calls, record them, and convert the content into text, ensuring that users do not miss any important information.

As part of its commitment to user safety, MobiFone encourages customers to report spam messages and calls by texting the number 5656. This proactive approach not only helps in identifying and addressing spam but also contributes to the overall security of the telecommunications environment.

On another front, the dangers of buying and selling Facebook pages for fraudulent purposes have come to light. A recent case involved an individual who fell victim to a scam after donating to a fanpage masquerading as the 'Thu Duc Regional General Hospital'. The page appeared legitimate, boasting over 3,000 followers and thousands of likes on its donation posts.

Investigations revealed that many of these fake pages are actually old accounts that have been renamed to run scam advertisements. For instance, a page impersonating the Hanoi Children's Hospital was originally named 'TPHCM Refrigeration' before its recent name change. Such tactics allow scammers to exploit Facebook's advertising capabilities, reaching potential victims more effectively.

To protect themselves, users are advised to check the 'Page Transparency' section on Facebook, which provides information about when a page was created and any name changes it has undergone. Pages that have been renamed to something entirely different should raise red flags for users.

The prevalence of these scams highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and vigilance among internet users. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, so too do the methods employed by scammers, making it essential for individuals to stay informed and cautious.

In conclusion, the rise of online scams, whether through fake e-commerce opportunities or fraudulent social media pages, underscores the importance of safeguarding personal information and remaining aware of potential threats. By implementing robust security measures and being vigilant, individuals can better protect themselves from falling victim to these deceptive schemes.
