ONGC Partners With Tata Power For Energy Storage

The MOU aims to bolster battery energy storage systems across India to support renewable integration.

India's Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has taken significant strides toward clean energy solutions by signing a non-binding memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) to explore opportunities within the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) value chain. This collaboration aims to address various applications across the energy sector and support India's ambitious clean energy goals.

The MoU was officially signed at the India Energy Week 2025 event, marking a notable occasion attended by prominent figures such as Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, the Hon’ble Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Arun Kumar Singh, ONGC’s Chairman & CEO, and Deepesh Nanda, CEO & Managing Director of TPREL.

Deepesh Nanda expressed the transformational potential of battery storage systems, stating, “Battery Energy Storage Systems will play a crucuial role in strengthening grid reliability, enabling greater renewable energy integration, and supporting India’s ambitious clean energy goals.” This initiative is part of broader efforts as India aims to achieve 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030.

The collaboration seeks to identify commercial ventures for utility-scale energy storage, which is integral to stabilizing the power grid and facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources. Other key applications under consideration include microgrid solutions, backup power systems, electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures, and ancillary services to promote energy trading.

ONGC’s Chairman and CEO, Arun Kumar Singh, reiterated their commitment to clean energy, stating, “This collaboration with Tata Power Renewable Energy is a strategic step to strengthen the nation’s energy storage capabilities, which are necessary for grid stability and large-scale renewable adoption.”

The partnership symbolizes both enterprises' shared vision of enhancing the renewable energy ecosystem within India, echoing the national commitment to transition toward sustainable energy models amid growing climate concerns.

Notably, TPREL's recent accomplishment—the commissioning of India’s largest solar and BESS project, featuring a 100 MW solar photovoltaic plant combined with 120 MWh of utility-scale BESS located at Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh—highlights their dedication to advancing energy storage technology. Deepesh Nanda remarked, “This partnership with ONGC marks a significant milestone in our efforts to drive India’s energy transition.”
