One NZ Launches Groundbreaking Satellite Messaging Service

One NZ begins nationwide satellite access via Starlink, enhancing communication for Kiwis.

On December 19, 2023, One NZ, the largest wireless service provider in New Zealand, announced the launch of One NZ Satellite TXT, making headlines as it becomes the first telecommunications company worldwide to offer widespread satellite messaging service using SpaceX's Starlink technology.

The One NZ Satellite TXT service enables users to send text messages via satellite across New Zealand, targeting areas where traditional cellular networks may be unreliable or non-existent. Initially, this new service supports four smartphone models: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and OPPO Find X8 Pro. Customers on monthly plans can utilize the service at no additional cost.

"One NZ Satellite TXT service is the first of its kind worldwide, targeting nationwide coverage," reported One NZ, emphasizing its groundbreaking nature. During the initial rollout, tests indicated users could usually send and receive messages within three minutes, with variations of up to ten minutes. With the deployment of more satellites and expanded service offerings throughout 2025, One NZ is optimistic about significantly reducing message delivery times.

The messaging service operates by utilizing Starlink's satellite constellation, which allows for seamless communication even during adverse weather conditions. This capability is particularly important for areas prone to natural disasters, where communication lines can be severed. One NZ representatives stated, "We anticipate shortening message delivery times significantly as we launch more satellites," showcasing the foresight of this initiative.

Revolutionizing how New Zealanders connect, the One NZ Satellite TXT is expected to promote greater digital inclusion, especially for residents of rural and remote locations. This will help bridge the gap between urban and less accessible areas, ensuring reliable communication across the nation. With only 80% of the country currently having access to traditional mobile services, the introduction of satellite messaging fills these gaps effectively.

One NZ has ambitious plans for the future of its satellite services. Beyond basic text messaging, the company intends to expand its offerings to include voice calls and data services. This next phase reflects the growing need for comprehensive communication solutions as the world adopts more satellite technologies.

Meanwhile, companies like T-Mobile are also advancing satellite communication capabilities. Earlier this year, T-Mobile received approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to offer similar Starlink messaging services to customers affected by Hurricane Helen and Hurricane Milton. This expansion highlights the growing trend of merging terrestrial and satellite communication networks.

One NZ's launch is not isolated to unique domestic developments. Starlink has also signed partnerships with various countries, including Canada, Australia, Japan, Peru, Switzerland, and Chile, to facilitate satellite messaging services. These strategic collaborations indicate the universal demand for enhanced connectivity enabled by satellite technology.

Overall, One NZ's initiative marks a significant step forward for telecommunications globally. With increasing reliance on digital communication channels, particularly during emergencies, the integration of satellite services allows for enhanced connectivity. One NZ is well-positioned to lead the charge toward improved communication and accessibility throughout New Zealand.

Looking forward, One NZ aims to continuously improve and adapt its services to meet the needs of its customers, ensuring they remain at the forefront of technological advancements within the telecommunication industry. The integration of satellite connectivity can redefine how Kiwis interact, work, and communicate, fostering greater inclusion and accessibility across the country.
