Omsk's Iconic 'Radost' Sign Set To Return Next Week

Mayor confirms completion date for beloved sign restoration project, blending history with modern illumination.

Work is currently underway to restore the iconic "Radost" store sign, which once graced the House of Wedding on Karl Marx Avenue, with the project nearing completion, set for next week.

On March 12, 2025, Omsk Mayor Sergei Shelest announced on social media, "Radost is returning," confirming the installation of the sign at house number 31. Residents of Omsk are eager to see the return of the familiar name, which has now become part of the city’s cultural fabric.

The restoration of this historic sign, measuring 20 meters long and 2.5 meters high, has been spearheaded by the company "Brusnika." Mayor Shelest indicated the project would be finished by March 19, 2025, bringing back to life the aesthetic and emotional connection many locals have with the store.

According to the mayor, the sign will feature voluminous aluminum letters mounted on a sturdy metal frame. The design incorporates architectural illumination, ensuring it shines even at night. This aspect of the project is particularly exciting, as it will allow the well-known sign name to be visible and inviting after dark. "The illumination will give the sign new life and significance," commented one resident who expressed their anticipation.

Uniquely, this sign will be a faithful replica of the original, which could not be restored due to its deterioration over time. This copy not only mirrors the original font and size, but it also draws upon the craftsmanship of local manufacturers, funded by the investor, ensuring it blends seamlessly back onto the historical backdrop of the avenue.

"We made sure to take the wind load and temperature fluctuations typical of Omsk's climate when designing the sign," Shelest stated, emphasizing the project's attention to local conditions and safety standards. The inversion of specially crafted materials will help sustain the sign throughout harsh weather cycles.

This project reflects more than just aesthetics; it's about heritage. For many residents, the 'Radost' sign was not simply the name of the shop, but rather part of their collective memory and identity. “It feels like part of our community is returning,” another local remarked.

The initiative saw contributions from the local community, as Omsk citizens gathered resources to facilitate the illumination of the letters, showcasing community spirit and investment in preserving local history.

With work moving swiftly and expectations high, the upcoming completion of the 'Radost' sign restoration is sure to be celebrated across Omsk. This restored landmark not only promises to beautify the cityscape but also serves as a reminder of Omsk's rich past and the importance of preserving community heritage.
