Celebrated actress Olivia Hussey Eisley, famed for her timeless portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73. The news, confirmed by her family, was shared through her official Instagram account on December 27.
“It is with profane sadness we announce the passing of Olivia Hussey Eisley, who went peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on December 27th,” the family's statement read. They added, “Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.”
Born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Hussey moved to London as a child, where she trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. She was only 15 when she captured the role of Juliet, alongside co-star Leonard Whiting, whose performances contributed to the film's success, winning her both a David di Donatello award and Golden Globe.
Hussey’s career was much more than this singular role, with significant contributions to cinema including her appearances in the cult classic horror film Black Christmas (1974), Death on the Nile (1978), and the acclaimed miniseries Jesus of Nazareth (1977). Her body of work extends over decades, with her last notable appearance being the 2015 film Social Suicide.
The actress leaves behind her children Alex, Max, and India, her husband of 35 years, David Glen Eisley, and her grandson, Greyson. The family expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time and emphasized the love and legacy she left behind. “We thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and ask for privacy as we mourn the loss of a truly special soul,” they said.
The role of Juliet, which made her famous, was not without controversy. The film’s nudity scenes, recorded when both she and Whiting were minors, led to legal action years later. Hussey and Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, claiming sexual exploitation, but the suit was dismissed by the courts.
Leonard Whiting, now 74, paid tribute to his long-time co-star through his wife’s Instagram account, saying, “Olivia, we shared so many things from our sweet innocent childhood. The world will forever Remember your beauty inside and out.”
Olivia Hussey’s contributions to film and her memorable performances have made her one of Hollywood's cherished stars. Both fans and peers celebrate not only her roles on screen but the kindness and grace she brought to those around her. The film industry has lost not just an actress but a captivating spirit whose legacy will linger on through her extensive body of work.
Recognized for her significant impact on cinema, Hussey's memory will be preserved through her films and the emotional connections she built with audiences and colleagues alike. Her passing on December 27 leaves behind a legacy of creativity, talent, and tenderness.
