Ole Miss Rebels Set For Gator Bowl Showdown Against Duke

With strong commitment from players and new offensive strategies, Ole Miss aims for victory on January 2.

The Ole Miss Rebels football team is gearing up for the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, set to take place on January 2 against the Duke Blue Devils. Both teams finished their respective seasons with impressive 9-3 records, making this matchup highly anticipated as they compete for success on the bowl stage.

Led by quarterback Jaxson Dart and head coach Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss entered the bowl season with aspirations of continuing their success after last year’s Peach Bowl victory. Meanwhile, Duke, coached by Manny Diaz, capped off their regular season with a thrilling win against Wake Forest, solidifying their spot in the Gator Bowl.

Despite both teams sharing the same season record, Ole Miss finished the regular season ranked 33rd for their strength of schedule. They were originally vying for a College Football Playoff berth before suffering a shocking loss to Florida during the late season. Their final game was a tough victory against archrivals Mississippi State, showcasing the Rebels' resilience.

What stands out for Ole Miss this season is not just their dynamic offense, led by Dart, but also their formidable defense, ranked fourth nationally for scoring defense, surrendering just 13.9 points per game. Such statistics reiterate the strength of defensive coordinator Pete Golding's strategy, which has been pivotal to the Rebels' success. The defense's standout players, such as defensive tackles Walter Nolen and JJ Pegues, have combined for 89 tackles this season, effectively neutralizing opposing offenses.

For Duke to counteract Ole Miss' sturdy defensive unit, they will rely on new starting quarterback Henry Belin IV. He will need to leverage his mobility and running skills to mitigate the Rebels' defensive prowess. Offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer is expected to implement read options and quarterback runs to pave the way for offensive production against Ole Miss' strong rush defense, which ranked second nationally by allowing only 83.5 rushing yards per game.

"Their box is extremely talented, and they run a lot of twist games to try and create disruption. But we've seen a lot of twists all year round," noted Duke’s offensive lineman Brian Parker II, highlighting the steep challenge posed by the Rebels’ frontline. He emphasized the need for adaptability against this elite defensive unit, expressing confidence among the Blue Devils going forward.

The Rebels' own defensive edge will partly be provided by pass rusher Princely Umanmielen, who shone brightly throughout this season with ten and a half sacks. His ability to exert pressure on the quarterback during passing situations can pose significant challenges for Duke, particularly on third downs. Umanmielen’s speed could create opportunities to disrupt Belin IV’s rhythm immediately.

Despite bowl games often seeing players opt out to prepare for potential NFL careers, Ole Miss is bucking this trend. Star wide receiver Jordan Watkins is among the players who have chosen to participate, highlighting the team’s strong commitment to one another and their season. After joining the Rebels from Louisville before the 2022 season, Watkins has become integral to the momentum and shift within the program, helping to solidify its culture and approach moving forward.

Watkins articulated the prevailing attitude among his teammates toward the Gator Bowl. "I don't think it was a surprise at all because everybody on this team is so bought-in. What the coaches and [Lane] Kiffin have been able to do these last couple of years has really built the brotherhood here. It's also built the foundation for this team and the future of this program," he explained. The culture cultivated under Kiffin’s leadership seems to be strengthening with every passing season, giving players like Watkins hope for the future success of Ole Miss football.

Kickoff for the Gator Bowl is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT and it will be broadcast on ESPN. Fans are buzzing with excitement, eager to see how the Rebels will translate their season's work onto the bowl stage against the Blue Devils. With both teams equally determined to notch one more victory, the game promises to be thrilling.
