Ola Electric Shares Plummet Amid Growing Controversy

A viral social media incident sparks scrutiny over service quality, prompting shareholder concern and stock price drop

Ola Electric has found itself in hot water lately as its shares fell by 9% over the weekend, following intense scrutiny brought on by social media complaints about its service quality. The e-scooter company, which has made significant waves in India's electric vehicle market, commands about 27% of the e-scooter sector. This tumultuous dip is far from isolated; it reflects the turbulent environment Ola Electric is currently operating within.

The catalyst for this recent fallout was comedienne Kunal Kamra, who showcased his discontent through social media. He posted snapshots of numerous Ola scooters, seemingly neglected and gathering dust outside one of the company's showrooms. This image not only went viral but also spurred countless other customers to voice their grievances. Complaints flooded numerous platforms, underscoring issues with service delays and repair responsiveness. Kamra's posts quickly sparked dialogues about Ola Electric's service standards and its founder's ability to manage customer concerns.

Ola Electric's founder, Bhavish Aggarwal, did not take Kamra's criticisms lightly. He publicly admonished the comedian on social media, urging him to allow the company to focus on improving service before airing their grievances. Aggarwal reassured both the public and potential investors of the company's commitment to enhancing its service framework. This response, rather than calming the situation, added fuel to the fire. The public spat not only attracted media attention but raised pressing questions about the company's reliability.

This struggle for reputation is merely the latest chapter in Ola Electric’s rollercoaster ride since it entered the stock market. Initially, the company experienced phenomenal success, with shares initially priced at ₹76 soaring to ₹157.4 shortly after listing. Yet, since reaching their peak, the shares have plummeted around 46%. The current downturn is particularly concerning, with Ola Electric facing increased competition from established players like Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor, who have ramped up their presence within the electric vehicle market.

Falling stock prices tend to indicate wider woes within the business and, alarmingly for shareholders, Ola Electric’s service centers seem overwhelmed. A recent report from HSBC analysts highlighted the capacity struggles at several service stations, where employees were reportedly struggling to meet the demands and needs of customers. They described many service stations as being “overwhelmed” and “under-resourced,” with significant backlogs hindering timely service.

The problems have not only led to declining stock prices but have also drawn the ire of consumers. Since September 2023, the National Consumer Helpline has recorded over 10,600 complaints against Ola Electric, showcasing widespread dissatisfaction among its customer base. Complaints ranged from delays in servicing to failures to deliver new vehicles, exacerbated by fruitless efforts to reach customer service. An alarming figure from the helpline indicates nearly 3,400 of these complaints concerned delays related to servicing e-scooter models.

Adding insult to injury, Ola Electric found itself involved in even more controversy last week when it received a show-cause notice from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA). The notice alleged violations including misleading advertising and unfair trade practices. The CCPA has provided the company with fifteen days to respond to these serious allegations, and though Ola Electric quickly responded, declaring the inquiry would not affect its finances or operations, the company’s reputation continues to take hits.

Despite the challenges, Ola Electric is attempting to turn the tide. They've made pledges to expand their service network aggressively. Currently, there are around 500 service centers, and plans are underway to double this number to manage rising demand and consumer expectations effectively. Optimistically, stakeholders hope these steps will restore confidence among consumers.

Yet, with competition heating up and service reputation at stake, the challenges Ola Electric faces are anything but trivial. Skepticism remains abundant, especially among analysts who argue outstanding service quality is key for any player trying to thrive in the fast-evolving EV industry. Investors are left watching closely as the firm navigates the road of recovery.

With market forces and customer expectations shifting rapidly, the path forward for Ola Electric is steeped with uncertainties, and every move they make carries significant weight. Aggarwal’s commitment to fix the grievances is underwhelming for some, and until the promises translate to improved service quality and consumer satisfaction, both shares and reputation may continue to take hits.

At this pivotal moment, all eyes will be on how effectively Ola Electric can overhaul its service model and regain public trust. Whether the company's efforts will be enough to weather this storm and rebuild investor confidence remains to be seen. The future of Ola Electric may well depend on their ability to listen, respond, and adapt to their consumers’ needs.

For Ola Electric, the stakes are high. It’s not just about riding the wave of electric vehicle popularity; it’s also about proving they can keep up with their promises. Winds of change may be necessary for steering clear of current controversies, but can the company turn these challenges around before investors completely bail?
