Oita Welcomes Filming Of Hagure Taka Drama

Kaito Kamio stars as lead with notable cast amid winter difficulties

Filming is underway for the new period drama 'Hagure Taka' (はぐれ鴉) in Oita Prefecture, with Kaito Kamio (神尾楓珠) taking the lead role, surrounded by several distinguished actors including Naoki Zaizen (財前直見), Chihiro Yamamoto (山本千尋), and Kippei Shiina (椎名桔平). Based on the novel by Ryo Akagami, this period mystery is set against the backdrop of Edo-era Takeda, promising thrilling narratives woven through historical settings.

The production kicked off on January 10, 2024, and filming has captured the cold winter mornings typical of January. Before dawn, the cast arrived to prepare for the day's shooting, which included rigorous makeup sessions. "Good morning, it’s currently 4:50 AM, and we’re starting the shoot for 'Hagure Taka'," announced TOS anchor Tomohiko Tanabe (田辺智彦), who also participated as an extra. He humorously added, "I’m going to get my makeup and costume done now," before heading to the designated makeup area set up at a hotel.

The early morning shoots involved detailed hair and makeup, using traditional styles reflective of the Edo period. A highlight was the use of authentic wigs, with Tanabe noting, "It looks like you’ve shaved your head completely!" as the makeup artist expertly crafted his look. The elaborate process involved layering fabric called 'habutae' to conceal the actors' own hair, showcasing the lengths the production went to for authenticity.

Despite the freezing weather conditions, where temperatures dipped as low as -3.1 degrees Celsius, the cast maintained their spirits. "I can’t feel my toes at all; they’re bright red! It’s very cold!" joked fellow TOS anchor Yuzuki Tane (刀祢優月), who portrayed a maid serving the samurai. The cast and crew put their best foot forward, embodying their characters against the stark Oita winter backdrop.

Filming locations included the historical Sugiyakake (酢屋の坂), where action-focused scenes were recorded, particularly those featuring Kamio and cast member Kanro Morita (森田甘路) as they navigated their way through the set. The authenticity continued with the utilization of dry leaves and other props transported from filming studios in Kyoto to create the perfect ambiance.

Around 5 AM, after several hours of intensive preparation, the team finally called, “Ready! Action!” Filming continued with seamless coordination among the crew, which impressed Tanabe. "This drama is being created through collaboration from many people," he mused following the filming wrap-up, observing the dedication and teamwork involved.

Once the Oita location wraps up, 'Hagure Taka' will transition to filming around Kyoto, continuing through February. Audiences will get to enjoy this period piece when it airs, expectedly, by July 2025. The narrative promises to be richly layered, with the drama encapsulating the very essence of historical storytelling.
