The Ohio State women’s basketball team has been making headlines with their recent performances, particularly with their decisive wins against notable opponents.
At the Bay Area Women's Classic held at the Chase Center in San Francisco, Ohio State faced off against Stanford. The game showcased Ohio State’s dominance, leading to an impressive blowout victory over the Cardinal. Stanford struggled throughout the match, shooting only 12.5% from three-point range, significantly hampering their chances of mounting any sort of comeback.
Ohio State's strong defense played a pivotal role, capitalizing on Stanford’s errors and converting opportunities on the offensive end. With this performance, Ohio State sent a clear message about their aspirations this season.
Shortly after this impressive victory, Ohio State went on to face UIC on December 22. The game, unfortunately for the Bobcats, ended with them on the losing side with a score of 91-45. Graduate student Aliah McWhorter led the Bobcats with nine points, marking her career high, followed closely by senior Kennedi Watkins who contributed seven points.
The game did not start well for Ohio, who started with intensity on defense but quickly saw their focus diminish. UIC capitalized on this, going on an 11-0 run to establish their lead at 14-8. Despite some spirited efforts, including Watkins’ layup, the Flames extended their lead throughout the game.
By halftime, UIC was firmly in control, leading 47-24. The rebounding battle heavily favored UIC, limiting Ohio’s scoring chances, particularly from second chances. Ohio's struggles continued through the second half, and by the end of the third quarter, they trailed significantly at 71-36.
Despite the disappointing loss, Ohio State's recent form leading up to this game demonstrated their potential. Following the UIC defeat, the team is gearing up for their next challenge against Georgia, with the game set for Saturday, December 28, at 4 p.m. ET, available to fans on SEC+.
