Ohio State Dominates Oregon, Advances To Playoff Semifinal

The Buckeyes deliver another impressive win as they prepare for the national championship run.

Ohio State University delivered another statement performance on New Year’s Day, dominating the Oregon Ducks with a resounding 41-21 victory during the College Football Playoff quarterfinals at the Rose Bowl. This impressive win not only avenged the Buckeyes' earlier loss to the Ducks but also solidified their status as one of the most formidable teams vying for the national championship.

From the opening whistle, Ohio State set the tone, racing to a jaw-dropping 34-0 lead by halftime. Quarterback Will Howard showcased his stellar form, completing over 74% of his passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns. Howard’s performance was pivotal; he executed pinpoint throws under pressure, highlighting the Buckeyes’ offensive prowess.

Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who is quickly becoming Ohio State's star attraction, caught seven passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Smith has now amassed 290 receiving yards and four touchdowns over two playoff games, proving to be Howard's favorite target. His dynamic playstyle has been significant to the Buckeyes’ success, creating mismatches against opposing defenses.

Defensively, Ohio State was relentless. The Buckeyes’ front seven, led by middle linebacker Cody Simon, secured the team's standing as one of the toughest units this postseason. Simon earned the title of Rose Bowl defensive MVP after registering 11 tackles, including two sacks and three tackles for loss. The Ohio State defense held Oregon to -23 rushing yards, showcasing their ability to shut down the opponent's ground game effectively.

Ohio State totaled eight sacks during the game, marking the highest number of sacks allowed by Oregon all season. Defensive ends JT Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer each contributed two sacks, as Ohio State consistently pressured Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, disrupting their offensive rhythm.

Ryan Day and his coaching staff have received accolades for steering the team back on track after their recent loss to Michigan. The Buckeyes’ strategy has clearly evolved, emphasizing aggressive play calling and exploiting matchups. Chip Kelly’s offensive scheme has seen Howard efficiently distribute the ball, utilizing both established stars and lesser-known players effectively. For example, tight end Gee Scott Jr. has stepped up, making pivotal catches, including key first downs.

On the ground, TreVeyon Henderson led the rushing attack with 94 yards and two touchdowns, demonstrating both speed and power. His ability to break tackles has been invaluable as he averages 9.7 yards per carry during the playoffs. Henderson's emergence alongside Quinshon Judkins, who added 85 yards against Oregon, has created a powerful backfield duo.

While superstars have shined, players like Donovan Jackson, who shifted to tackle midseason due to injuries, have been unsung heroes. Jackson performed impressively against Oregon’s fierce opponents, allowing no pressures and earning high grades from Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Ohio State’s defense not only excelled against the pass but also displayed high-caliber coverage skills. Cornerbacks Davison Igbinosun and Denzel Burke were pivotal, limiting Oregon's wideouts to minimal gains. Igbinosun showcased his improvement, allowing no penalties and making substantial plays to prevent scoring opportunities.

Looking forward, this performance places Ohio State firmly as national championship contenders. They will now face the Texas Longhorns next, with fan expectations soaring as they attempt to ride this wave of momentum. Coach Day will look to build on Ohio State’s recent playoff successes as they seek to claim their first national title since the 2014 season.

Ohio State seems to have found their rhythm at the right moment, as their execution has dramatically improved since their previous encounters. With their offense and defense firing on all cylinders, the Buckeyes will aim to carry this momentum forward against Texas, establishing themselves as the team to beat this postseason.
