Odisha Declares The Sabarmati Report Tax-Free

The film inspired by the Godhra incident will be available without entertainment tax, promoting awareness of its controversial history

On November 28, 2024, the Odisha government made headlines with its announcement declaring the Hindi film The Sabarmati Report tax-free within the state. This film, which has quickly garnered attention for its sensitive portrayal of the tragic Godhra train burning incident from 2002, is now exempt from entertainment tax, joining other BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, who have also exempted the film.

This decision was revealed during a session of the Odisha Assembly by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi confirmed the move on social media, emphasizing the film's significant role in exposing past injustices. He noted, "The people's government has decided to make The Sabarmati Report, based on a true incident, tax-free. The film highlights how Karsevaks were burned alive during the Godhra fire incident, catering to vested interests and creating unrest. This film aims to bring forth such hair-raising, heart-wrenching truths and raise public awareness."

The film depicts the events surrounding the burning of the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express, which resulted in the tragic deaths of 59 Karsevaks. The incident was pivotal, igniting communal riots across Gujarat. By declaring the film tax-free, Odisha becomes the seventh state to take such action, continuing to reflect its alignment with the party's ideology.

The film, directed by Dheeraj Sarna and produced by well-known figures such as Ektaa R Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, features prominent actors Vikrant Massey and Raashii Khanna. The project has stirred discussions across the country, not only from the audience but also from political figures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have publicly praised the film for its courage to reveal historical truths.

After the film's release, it has been performing impressively at the box office. Reports indicate it generated approximately ₹20.40 crore within its first twelve days, indicating strong viewer engagement. This uptick was not limited to initial weekends; each subsequent week exhibited raised earnings as the film continued to attract viewers interested not just for entertainment but also for education about historical events through cinema.

Producer Ektaa Kapoor shared her gratitude toward the Odisha government and Chief Minister Majhi, stating, "Heartfelt gratitude to Hon'ble Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Ji for making The Sabarmati Report tax-free. This support will help bring the truth of significant chapters of our history to more people." Her words underline the belief among the creators of the film about the necessity of telling such difficult stories.

The film's impact goes beyond just financial; it has sparked meaningful discourse on the importance of public memory and historical accuracy. CM Majhi's comment captures the essence of this endeavor, highlighting the film's role as a tool for awareness and reflection within society. His declaration also marks a significant endorsement for films taking on challenging narratives during turbulent times.

With the backdrop of films becoming avenues for discussing sensitive societal issues, The Sabarmati Report stands as another example of the power of cinema to incite discussion, evoke emotion, and perhaps, alter perceptions. Audiences eager for historical and emotional narratives are likely to view this film as not only art but as part of the dialogue surrounding their past and future.

Many film analysts suggest this trend of tax exemption may reflect larger political narratives as cinema often intersects with cultural and historical perceptions within society. The prominence of this film may encourage similar productions to shed light on various historical contexts, allowing for imagination intertwined with reality.

With its compelling storytelling and governmental support, The Sabarmati Report invites viewers to confront difficult truths and plays its role as not merely entertainment but as historical investigation—a reflection of the societal condition it aims to portray.

Overall, the approval for tax exemption signals not only support for the film but underlines the growing recognition of cinema as influential storytelling about real historical events. Major figures, governmental endorsements, and box office success all signify the film's potential to leave lasting impressions on audiences nationwide.
