Obituaries: Remembering Influential Lives Lost Recently

Recent passings include Richard W. Jagodowski, Richard Parsons, and others known for their contributions and leadership.

The past month has witnessed the passing of several prominent figures whose contributions have left indelible marks on their respective fields. Richard W. Jagodowski, Richard Parsons, Richard E. Ray, and Richard E. "Dick" Sprowl are among those remembered for their remarkable lives and achievements.

Richard W. Jagodowski, aged 92, peacefully passed away at his home on December 17, 2024, surrounded by family. A proud 1950 graduate of Chicopee High School, Jagodowski served for two years during the Korean War, contributing to the safety and security of his country. Following his military service, he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Western New England College in 1963 and dedicated 30 years of his life to Hamilton Standard as an Analytical Engineer.

Aside from his engineering career, Jagodowski was also known for his musical talents, particularly as a drummer for local Polish-American bands such as The Silver Chimes and The New Sound. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sandra P. Jagodowski, and his two sons, Richard R. and David W., along with four grandchildren and numerous extended family members. Despite losing his granddaughter Alexandra, fond memories of family gatherings and musical performances will live on.

Richard Parsons, another notable figure, passed away on December 26, 2023, at the age of 76. Known for his transformative leadership, Parsons had significant roles as CEO of Time Warner and chairman of Citigroup. He fought bravely against complications from multiple myeloma, which was diagnosed back in 2015, eventually leading to his withdrawal from various corporate positions.

Parsons was born and raised in Brooklyn and showed promise at an early age, enrolling at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa at just 16 years old. His time at the university shaped his worldview and management style, emphasizing the importance of diversity and collaboration. “I grew up on campus, and it was paradise on earth,” he reminisced, reflecting on the friendships and experiences he formed during those formative years.

His professional accolades are numerous: under his leadership, Time Warner navigated significant hurdles post-AOL merger, and he returned Citigroup to profit during the financial crisis. He was held in high regard not only for his sharp business acumen but also for his integrity and people skills, with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver noting, "Dick Parsons was a brilliant and transformational leader...who led with integrity and never shied away from challenges." Parsons is survived by his wife, Laura, and their family.

Richard E. Ray, aged 86, passed away on December 27, 2024, at the U.K. Medical Center. Known for his dedication to law enforcement, Ray served as detective for the Pike County Sheriff’s Department and was remembered fondly as both a husband and father. He leaves behind his wife Annette along with children and grandchildren, ensuring his legacy of service and family values carries on. His visitation and funeral arrangements reflect the love and respect held for him by his community.

Conversely, Richard E. "Dick" Sprowl, aged 87, died on December 24, 2024, at his Warren home surrounded by family. Known for his contributions to both the local fire department and community service, Sprowl's commitment spanned more than five decades. He played numerous roles, including Assistant Chief and later Captain of the fire department, leaving behind achievements such as earning the title of Volunteer Firefighter of the Year.

Sprowl's impact extended beyond the fire department; he was also dedicated to his family, playing an active role as father and grandfather. His obituary noted him as "a humble and giving man, willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need..." and he will be dearly missed by those whose lives he touched. His funeral is planned for early January, allowing friends and family to celebrate his life together.

These recent losses mark the end of significant chapters not just in their lives but also for their families and communities. Each individual’s story uniquely intertwines with societal narratives of dedication, leadership, and commitment to family. They instructional figures who paved ways for future generations, ensuring their legacies will never be forgotten.
