Obayashi Corporation Successfully Exports Green Hydrogen To Fiji

The project demonstrates Japan's leadership in decarbonization and innovative energy solutions.

On January 28, 2025, Obayashi Corporation announced the successful delivery and utilization of green hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources, exported from New Zealand to Fiji. The green hydrogen was transported via sea from Auckland Port to Lautoka Port, Fiji, taking approximately one week to complete the shipment. Upon arrival, the hydrogen was used as fuel for hydrogen co-firing generators operated by Fiji Gas, the national energy supplier. This process helps mitigate reliance on fossil fuels and aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

This innovative project is the result of collaboration between various partners, including Halcyon Power, which is affiliated with Obayashi Corporation, and Fiji Gas. Together, they undertook this demonstration project to develop the logistics for green hydrogen production, transportation, and utilization. Obayashi Corporation acted as the lead contractor, overseeing the entire project, conducting local surveys, and facilitating the deployment of hydrogen co-firing generators.

Halcyon Power has been instrumental since the opening of New Zealand's first megawatt-level hydrogen production plant back in December 2021. Their success lays the groundwork for establishing a hydrogen supply chain within New Zealand, making this the country’s first attempt at exporting green hydrogen.

According to reports, the project was conducted under Japan’s Ministry of the Environment subsidy program, which aims to promote decarbonization technologies domestically and internationally. This initiative is more than just a transportation success; it's part of Japan's commitment to share its advanced decarbonization technology with other nations, fostering international cooperation.
