Obata No Oniisan Wins Ski Jumping Competition

The comedian triumphs at Karuizawa, celebrating with family after a brilliant performance.

Obata no Oniisan, the well-known comedian, achieved a remarkable victory on January 22, 2025, at the Giant Slalom competition held at the Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort, Nagano Prefecture. Competing among the regular category for those under 39, Obata finished first with an impressive time of 47.92 seconds.

This victory marks his return to competitive skiing after more than two decades. He previously placed fifth at last year's event with a time of 53.68 seconds, so his latest performance reflects significant progress. “I was happy to win as I entered to win,” Obata said, expressing his satisfaction with this accomplishment. Reflecting on his training and mental preparation, he noted, “Having run this course multiple times, I felt calm and comfortable.”

Obata is not new to skiing. He started at the age of three and was selected as a designated regional player by the Niigata Prefecture Alpine Skiing Association during his junior high school years. After stepping back from competitive skiing for approximately 22 years to focus on his entertainment career, he made his serious comeback earlier this year, showcasing his determination and skill at the competition.

His wife, Yamazaki Yuki, who is also known as a prominent TV announcer, showed her support by attending the event, adding to Obata's joy. "The fact my wife came to Karuizawa made it special," he remarked, noting the importance of family support even during competitive ventures. "We plan to celebrate the victory with a trip together," he added, indicating plans to enjoy some family time following his achievement.

Obata's commitment to skiing extends beyond just personal enjoyment; he feels he has acquired a sort of duty to enliven the competitions. “I feel like I've become something of a mission now, to bring excitement to the events,” he explained, acknowledging the encouragement he receives from fans and fellow competitors alike.

Despite the demanding nature of his career, balancing entertainment commitments with skiing, he remains passionate about both fields. He humorously shared how he discussed his upcoming skiing competition with fellow comedians during rehearsals for his TV show. “They laughed when I told them, ‘I have to compete twelve hours after our program's recording!’” he recounted, highlighting how laughter and camaraderie from his fellow entertainers motivate him to keep pursuing his passions.

Looking forward, Obata has his eyes set on the All Japan Masters competition, scheduled for March. Although he acknowledges potential scheduling conflicts with his engagements, he views it as preparation for future competitions. “I treat every physical activity as training, whether it's indoor play with my son or external competitions,” he stated, emphasizing his intent to stay active year-round.

His enthusiasm extends to his family as well; he's eager for his young son to connect with skiing. “I want him to take an interest and experience the joy of winter sports,” Obata expressed with evident pride as he talked about their family adventures in the snow together. “Each family member enjoys the winter wonderland differently, and I hope we can create wonderful memories as he grows.”

Obata's remarkable skiing comeback not only showcases his talent as both an entertainer and athlete but also emphasizes the importance of family support, commitment, and passion for sports. His story is one of perseverance, laughter, and making joyful memories, both on and off the slopes.
