Nurses Celebrated Worldwide On International Nurses Day

Events in India and Ukraine highlight the vital role of nurses in healthcare.

On May 10, 2025, the Himalayan Institute of Nursing at Himalayan University (HU) celebrated International Nurses Day, recognizing the invaluable contributions of nurses to the healthcare system worldwide. The event was marked by a motivational speech from HU’s Head Administrator, Reyoni Ete, who commended the nursing community for their unwavering commitment to providing compassionate and effective healthcare. Ete emphasized the significant role nurses play, stating, "Nurses are not only in hospitals and clinics but also in educating and nurturing communities."

Yapu Lida, the head of the nursing department, expressed gratitude to all nurses and healthcare professionals for their relentless service, highlighting the importance of International Nurses Day as a time to honor their dedication. Nursing students participated in a cultural program that included traditional dance, song, and skit, showcasing their talents and the spirit of the celebration.

Meanwhile, on May 12, Interfax-Ukraine will host a press conference titled "One in Three: How a Ukrainian Nurse Lives and Works. Presentation of Study." This roundtable discussion will present findings from a large-scale study focused on the working conditions, workload, pay, and legal protection of Ukrainian nurses. The event is expected to address critical issues such as staff overload in hospitals, the lack of standards for patient-to-nurse ratios, and the emotional burnout faced by nurses, especially those working in combat zones.

Key participants in the discussion include Oksana Slobodyana from the NGO medical movement "Be Like Us," along with study authors Oksana Dutchak, Olena Tkalych, and Natalya Lomonosova. They will be joined by lawyers, human rights activists, and nurses from various regions of Ukraine, all contributing to a conversation that seeks to shed light on the challenges faced by nurses in the country. The event will be streamed live on the Interfax-Ukraine YouTube channel.

In a similar vein, Father Muller Medical College Hospital in Mangalore celebrated Nurses Week 2025 with a valedictory ceremony on May 10, 2025. This year, the theme was "Our Nurses Our Future- Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies," which served as a powerful reminder of the indispensable contributions made by nurses in shaping healthcare and building resilient communities. The day began with a solemn thanksgiving mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Richard Aloysius Coelho, who highlighted the essence of trust in the nursing profession.

The valedictory program commenced at 11 am, featuring a warm welcome for dignitaries and a heartfelt homage to the founders of the hospital. A significant highlight was the felicitation of veteran nurse Sr. Lucy Dsouza, recognized for her lifelong commitment and compassionate service. Chief Guest Dr. Lulu Sheriff emphasized the pivotal role of nurses as the backbone of the healthcare system, especially through their 24/7 dedication. She praised the economic and social value of nursing, encouraging continuous professional development.

During the celebration, awards were distributed for exemplary nursing service and academic achievements, honoring nurses who had completed 20 years of dedicated service. The prestigious Nightingale Awardee-2024, Ms. Prescilla D’Souza, was also recognized for her exceptional contributions to the field.

As National Nurses Week unfolds from May 6 to May 12, 2025, it serves as a platform to celebrate the power of nurses and their essential role in shaping a healthier future for all. The American Nurses Enterprise (ANE) has spotlighted the contributions of nurses through various initiatives, including national press conferences and educational webinars, aimed at engaging policymakers and the public.

May 6 marked National Nurses Day, followed by National Student Nurses Day on May 8, and culminating in International Nurses Day on May 12, which also coincides with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. According to Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, president of the American Nurses Association (ANA), "Nursing is more than a profession. It is a calling grounded in purpose, compassion, and service."

With over four million nurses in the U.S., the profession encompasses a wide range of roles, including licensed practical nurses (LPN), registered nurses (RN), and advanced practice nurses (APRN). Angela Beddoe, CEO of the ANE, stated, "Our mission is to champion nurses by prioritizing their well-being and ensuring they have support, recognition, and resources needed to thrive." This week, many buildings and landmarks across America will be illuminated to honor nurses and their contributions to healthcare.

In a heartfelt column, Juanita Carnes, a nurse practitioner with 39 years of experience, expressed gratitude towards nurses, highlighting their resilience in the face of adversity and the emotional toll of their work. She urged the community to recognize the hard work of nurses, stating, "Take time to extend your gratitude to each nurse in your life and those you encounter today and every day; they need care too."

As the celebrations continue, it is clear that the role of nurses is vital not only in patient care but also in shaping the future of healthcare systems globally. The collective efforts of nursing professionals, educators, and advocates are crucial in addressing the challenges faced by the nursing community and ensuring that their contributions are recognized and valued.
