Nürnberg Ice Tigers Extend Owen Headrick's Contract For 2025/26

The top defender impresses fans with outstanding statistics and leadership on the ice as he commits to another season with the team.

The Nürnberg Ice Tigers made an emphatic announcement on March 21, 2025, confirming the extension of their contract with top defender Owen Headrick for another season.

The 27-year-old Canadian, who joined the team in the summer of 2024 from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL), has rapidly become a key player in the organization. Headrick's first season in Europe was impressive, showcasing his skills across 57 games where he recorded 5 goals and 39 assists, accumulating a total of 40 points. This performance placed him among the top five most productive defenders in the PENNY DEL, the top division of professional ice hockey in Germany.

Moreover, his contributions did not stop there. Headrick boasted the highest pass completion rate on the Ice Tigers, an impressive 88.0 percent, and ranked third in tackle success rate at 58.2 percent. In terms of ice time, he was also a standout, averaging a league-leading 24 minutes and 28 seconds per game. These statistics reflect his significant role and versatility in the team, corroborating his reputation as one of the best players in the DEL.

After Headrick's contract extension, Ice Tigers' Sports Director Stefan Ustorf commented, "Owen Headrick has developed into an essential pillar and one of the best defenders in the DEL right from his first season in Nürnberg. He fits perfectly with our team and the path we want to take. I am very pleased that he will also play in Nürnberg next season."

As the Ice Tigers prepare for the future with their key players secured, the Schwenninger Wild Wings are also facing a significant transition. Following their elimination from the playoffs in the first round by the Nürnberger team, they announced that they would part ways with six players. Among those leaving are defenders Daryl Boyle and Jordan Murray, along with forwards Brandon McMillan, Daniel Neumann, Matt Puempel, and Ken Andre Olimb, who missed the entire season due to injury.

Daryl Boyle, a notable figure in German hockey, is a four-time German champion and an Olympic silver medalist. He is likely to retire, marking the end of a distinguished career. The Wild Wings also confirmed that Goalie Coach Josh Robinson would not continue his engagement at Neckar.

As the DEL season unfolds, the focus will be on how the roster changes will affect both teams. The Ice Tigers look to build on their successes with the core of their squad returning, while the Wild Wings will seek to rebuild their team spirit and performance ahead of next season.

The Ice Tigers' commitment to Headrick not only signifies their strategy to maintain a competitive edge but also underscores the importance of having high-caliber players on the roster. With his skills and leadership qualities, Headrick is expected to play a vital role in their pursuit of championship glory in the upcoming 2025/26 season.
