NTT Announces Major Name Change To NTT Corporation

The company aims to unify its global brand identity as it moves forward into new markets.

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) made a significant announcement on May 9, 2025, revealing that it will officially change its trade name to "NTT Corporation" effective July 1, 2025. This marks the end of an era for the name "Nippon Telegraph and Telephone," which has been in use since 1952, concluding a 73-year history.

During a press conference, NTT President Akira Shimada addressed the name change with a light-hearted remark, stating, "I'm not lonely at all," which elicited laughter from the audience. His comment seemed to reflect a positive outlook on the transition, as he emphasized the importance of moving forward. "We must grow towards the future, and with our new name, I want all 340,000 members of the NTT Group to work together to elevate NTT," he added.

Shimada explained, "I felt a sense of discomfort when the company was referred to as 'Japan Telegraph and Telephone' during overseas business trips," highlighting the need for consistency in branding as the company continues its international expansion.

In conjunction with the name change, NTT will also update its corporate logo, which has been in use since 1985. The new logo will adopt a font that is already utilized globally and will shift the corporate color from black to blue, aligning with the updated branding strategy.

Additionally, the changes will extend to other companies within the NTT Group. NTT East Japan and NTT West Japan will also change their trade names to "NTT East Japan Corporation" and "NTT West Japan Corporation," respectively, on the same date, July 1, 2025. NTT West Japan's President Ryota Kitamura, during a separate press conference held on the same day in Osaka, elaborated on the rationale behind the name change for his company. He stated, "The regional telecommunications business used to be centered on fixed-line phones, but now it is shifting to the Internet and corporate businesses. The name 'West Japan Telegraph and Telephone' is no longer appropriate."

Kitamura expressed excitement about the new name, saying, "The name 'New NTT West Japan' is fresh for me and the employees, and it will renew our determination."
