The controversy centers around the use of Tim Hortons gift cards, leading to the resignation of Peter Zwicker, the campaign manager for Tory candidate Susan Corkum-Greek.
The incident unfolded during Corkum-Greek's campaign for the Lunenburg constituency on November 9, 2024. According to reports, Zwicker distributed gift cards worth $2.07 to voters at a Tim Hortons drive-thru. His intention, he claimed, was merely to provide patrons with coverage for their coffee, after the restaurant denied his request for complimentary drinks. "I sincerely apologize for the distraction my actions have caused. This was not intended to undermine the campaign or its goals," Zwicker stated following his resignation.
The Nova Scotia Liberal Party quickly seized the opportunity to criticize the Tories, alleging this behavior constitutes bribery under the Elections Act, which strictly prohibits vote-buying practices. Liberal Party President Margaret Miller issued a sharp condemnation, asserting, "A Nova Scotia Conservative candidate allegedly out there bribing Nova Scotians to vote for her and her party — was this an isolated incident? This is certainly not behavior people expect from their elected officials nowadays."
Adding to the gravity of the claims, the Liberals have taken steps to escalate the situation by filing a petition with the Nova Scotia Supreme Court.
