Norway's Amundsen And Øyre Slind Shine At Toblach Pursuit

Impressive victories bolster their standings as Tour de Ski continues with thrilling competition.

On January 1, 2025, history was made at the Tour de Ski as Norway's Harald Oestberg Amundsen and Astrid Øyre Slind claimed victory in their respective 15km pursuit races held in the picturesque town of Toblach, Italy. The event, which featured elite skiers from around the world, showcased not only athletic prowess but also the strategy and endurance required to conquer the challenging course and weather conditions.

Harald Oestberg Amundsen dominated the men’s 15km pursuit race, finishing with a time of 35 minutes, 18.9 seconds. This victory marked his fourth win of the season and allowed him to extend his lead to 47 points in the overall World Cup standings. Despite his impressive performance, Amundsen faced tough competition from fellow Norwegian Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo, who is leading the Tour de Ski standings after Amundsen started 46.4 seconds ahead based on their previous race performance.

The race at Toblach was anything but straightforward for Amundsen. Although he initially pulled away from the field, increasing his lead to 41.5 seconds at one stage, the relentless climbs and intense downhill portions of the course challenged his stamina and tactics. Teeming with skiers, including Edvin Anger from Sweden, the crew behind him capitalized on the downhill sections to close the gap. Amundsen described the last stretch of the race as agonizing. "Probably the hardest race I have ever done," he said post-race. "I felt quite good at the beginning and tried to save some energy for the end, but I heard the guys were closing in... I was totally dead during the final two kilometers. They were quite close but I’m happy with the victory.

Meanwhile, Amundsen's victory added pressure to Klaebo, who managed to remain competitive even after starting behind. Klaebo’s ability to navigate the course's downhill terrain efficiently kept him within reach, only finishing 5.3 seconds behind Amundsen. This positioning proved advantageous for Klaebo, who now leads Amundsen by 57 seconds overall in the Tour de Ski standings.

On the women's side, Astrid Øyre Slind put on an equally captivating performance as she captured gold with a time of 38 minutes, 39.9 seconds. Slind’s triumph marked her third victory of the winter season and propelled her to the lead of the overall standings by six seconds over her compatriot Therese Johaug. Throughout the race, Slind and Johaug matched each other stride for stride, demonstrating their remarkable skill and tenacity.

Slind’s consistency throughout the race left little suspense. She and Johaug exchanged leads during the contest, each widening the gap on the rest of the competitors. Slind emerged victorious, finishing just 0.2 seconds ahead of Johaug, whose solid performance nevertheless kept her firmly within contention for the overall title. "I tried to push hard all the way to the final sprint," Slind remarked after securing her win, showcasing her competitive mindset.

Completing the women’s podium was Finland's Kerttu Niskanen, who came through the finish line 57.4 seconds behind Slind. These results reflect how competitive and unpredictable the Tour de Ski series remains, particularly with the intense rivalry among the top female skiers.

This pivotal race not only highlighted individual excellence but also set the stage for potentially thrilling upcoming events on the Tour de Ski calendar. Following Toblach, the series heads to Val di Fiemme, Italy, for continued competitive action. Athletes will face additional races including sprints and the challenging 20km skiathlon, which are sure to impact their standings as the championship nears completion.

With intense head-to-head challenges and till-now unexpected outcomes, both Amundsen and Øyre Slind’s victories at Toblach signal significant narratives to follow as they pursue their respective goals during the remaining Tour de Ski events. The fierce rivalry, as well as their shared hopes for the coveted Crystal Globe, will undoubtedly keep fans engaged and excited.
