On March 20, 2025, airports in Northern Sardinia unveiled impressive plans for the Summer IATA 2025 travel season, which begins on March 30. Anticipated to be the best season yet, the announcement included the introduction of six million available seats, which marks a 3% increase compared to 2024. Furthermore, travelers can look forward to 89 destinations and 154 connections, with the breakdown showing 105 international and 49 domestic routes available.
This growth initiative sees the addition of 11 new destinations and two new airlines that will join as partners in facilitating travel to and from Northern Sardinia. Notably, 43 partner airlines will be connecting the region to a total of 26 countries, significantly bolstering accessibility to and from this picturesque Italian locale.
At the forefront of these changes is Alghero airport, which is poised to support 36 connections in total: 15 domestic routes and 21 international ones. This expansion will connect Alghero to 15 European countries along with Italy, greatly improving travel options for local and visiting passengers alike. Low-cost airline Ryanair will play a considerable role in expanding routes from Alghero to major Italian destinations including Bari, Bergamo, Bologna, Catania, Milan Malpensa, Napoli, Palermo, Pescara, Pisa, and Venice. Additionally, Volotea will provide new routes to Turin, Verona, and celebrate the launch of a new connection to Florence.
ITA Airways, a key player operating flights in territorial continuity to Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate, will enhance connectivity by ensuring effective links between Alghero and key cities across Italy, as well as major European and intercontinental destinations within its network.
International routes from Alghero will include destinations such as Brussels (Belgium), Frankfurt and Munich (Germany), London Stansted (United Kingdom), Cork and Dublin (Ireland), Katowice (Poland), Bratislava (Slovakia), Barcelona and Madrid (Spain), and Budapest (Hungary). Volotea's introduction of routes to Bordeaux and Paris Orly (France) adds essential tourism opportunities between Sardinia and the second largest international market for arrivals, France.
In another exciting development, Wizz Air will enhance travel options by offering flights from Alghero to Bucharest (Romania), Budapest (Hungary), and Sofia (Bulgaria), which marks the first connection of its kind to the Bulgarian capital. New airline Air Serbia is also making its mark with a direct connection from Alghero to Belgrade (Serbia), opening a new market for Sardinia.
Charter flights will further enrich offerings from Alghero with JetTime providing routes to Copenhagen (Denmark), TUI to Stockholm (Sweden), Norwegian to Oslo (Norway), and Air Horizont to Bratislava (Slovakia).
Meanwhile, Olbia airport continues to flourish, boasting a network of 118 connections, 84 of which are international and 34 domestic routes operated by 40 airlines to 22 countries. This broad connectivity emphasizes Olbia's role as a vital hub for travel to and from Northern Sardinia.
As part of its summer operations, easyJet will launch new routes connecting Olbia to Edinburgh and Zurich, enriching travel options for UK and Swiss tourists. Additionally, British Airways' subsidiary BA Cityflier will connect Olbia to London City, expanding the reach of British airlines in Sardinia.
German airline Condor will contribute a new route from Olbia to Nuremberg, further catering to the German tourist market, which remains a cornerstone of tourism in Northern Sardinia. For the first time, Air Corsica will offer direct flights between Olbia and the French island of Corsica, marking another milestone in regional connectivity.
Furthermore, during the peak summer season, ITA Airways will bolster its operations by connecting Olbia with Turin, enhancing the annual offerings of Volotea on this route. Not to be overlooked, Lufthansa has also advanced the start of its operations between Olbia and both Munich and Frankfurt to early March 2025, reflecting the increasing demand for these routes.
