Northern India Faces Scorching Heat Wave This Week

Temperatures soar above 40 degrees Celsius in multiple states as heat wave warnings are issued.

As temperatures continue to rise across northern India, the heat wave has become a pressing concern for residents in various states. On April 22, 2025, Delhi recorded a temperature exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, prompting weather officials to warn of potential heat waves in the upcoming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the heat will persist, with maximum temperatures expected to remain around 40 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius until April 27, 2025.

In Delhi, the day started with clear skies and winds blowing at 10 to 20 kilometers per hour. However, the rising temperatures have raised alarms about the discomfort many residents are experiencing, especially at night when the heat does not seem to relent. The IMD has indicated that while the current conditions do not yet constitute a heat wave, the possibility remains as temperatures are expected to rise further.

Meanwhile, neighboring states are also grappling with similar heat conditions. In Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, the temperature reached 41 degrees Celsius, with forecasts indicating that the heat will persist. Residents are venturing outside only for essential tasks, shielding themselves from the harsh sun as hot winds sweep through the area. The weather department has confirmed that the situation is likely to worsen in the coming days.

In Madhya Pradesh, a significant heat wave is anticipated, with forecasts suggesting that several districts could see temperatures soar above 45 degrees Celsius. The IMD attributed this extreme heat to a Western Disturbance affecting the region, which is expected to keep the weather dry and lead to further increases in maximum temperatures. Weather scientist Divya E Surendran has reported that districts such as Datia, Bhind, Shivpuri, and Rewa are under heat wave alerts, with the heat expected to continue for at least five days.

The previous day, Sidhi recorded the highest temperature in Madhya Pradesh at 44.6 degrees Celsius. Other cities, including Tikamgarh and Satna, also experienced temperatures above 43 degrees Celsius. This trend of rising temperatures has left many residents seeking refuge indoors, as even the nights offer little relief from the heat.

In Uttarakhand, temperatures have reached up to 40 degrees Celsius, particularly in the plains districts like Haridwar and Roorkee. The weather department has forecast light rain in three districts, but the remaining areas will remain dry. The heat has been particularly intense in Dehradun, where the maximum temperature was recorded at 37 degrees Celsius, marking the hottest day of the season so far. The IMD has warned that the dry conditions will persist, leading to further increases in daytime temperatures.

Even in Rajasthan, the heat is expected to intensify, with the weather center in Jaipur predicting a mainly dry spell over the next few days. Maximum temperatures could rise by two to three degrees Celsius, and some areas have already recorded heat wave conditions. Churu, for instance, reached a scorching 42.2 degrees Celsius, which is 2.5 degrees above the normal for this time of year.

As the heat wave continues to grip northern India, residents are urged to take precautions. The IMD has recommended staying indoors during peak sun hours, hydrating adequately, and wearing loose, light-colored clothing to mitigate the effects of the heat. The ongoing weather patterns suggest that this heat wave may not be short-lived, as temperatures are expected to remain elevated for the foreseeable future.

In summary, the heat wave affecting several states in northern India is a growing concern. With temperatures already exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in places like Delhi and Ballia, and predictions of even higher temperatures in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, residents are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. As the days progress, the impact of this extreme weather will likely be felt across the region, making it crucial for communities to adapt to the rising temperatures.
