NorthEast United FC Secures Playoff Spot With Dominant Win

A 3-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC propels the Highlanders to the ISL playoffs after three years.

NorthEast United FC secured their place in the Indian Super League playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on March 3, 2025. This emphatic win ensured the Highlanders gathered 35 points from 23 matches, marking their impressive return to top form.

From the very first minute of the clash, NorthEast United demonstrated their intent. Early pressure forced Chennaiyin FC's goalkeeper, Mohammed Nawaz, to save from Jithin MS within the first five minutes. It wasn't long before the Highlanders opened the scoring. Nestor Albiach found the net just seven minutes in, thanks to exquisite interlink play initiated by Alaaeddine Ajaraie. Nestor received the ball near the edge of the area and expertly placed it past Nawaz, signaling the kickoff of what would be a dominant first half for the visitors.

The Highlanders doubled their lead with Jithin MS securing his spot on the scoresheet after 26 minutes, rounding off another well-crafted play. The combination of Mohammed Ali Bemammer and Ajaraie allowed Jithin to find space as he slotted the ball home, extending their lead to two goals. Ajaraie continued to be the pivotal force for NorthEast United, finding the net himself just 12 minutes later. He managed to convert following his initial attempt being blocked by Ryan Edwards. Ajaraie's second goal of the season pushed the Highlanders firmly in control at 3-0.

"With this emphatic victory, the Highlanders secured their place in the playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season," noted The Bridge. This triumph not only reflects their strong attacking prowess but also highlights their resolute defense, which has seen them achieve seven clean sheets so far. Captain Tondonba Singh and goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh were instrumental, with Gurmeet making several key saves, including denying Luka Brambilla and Vincy Barretto during the latter stages of the game.

While NorthEast United was having their day, Chennaiyin FC struggled to keep up. They showed promise, creating multiple opportunities, especially in the second half, but their finishing failed to match their buildup. Wilmar Jordan's goal late in the game was ruled offside, epitomizing their season's misfortunes, which has seen them consistently fail to convert golden opportunities.

Despite these struggles, the Marina Machans had their chances; they launched several attacks but simply couldn't get past NorthEast's disciplined defensive unit. The second half saw Chennaiyin's frustrations boil over as Ryan Edwards received his second yellow card for fouling Ajaraie near the penalty area, leaving his side to continue with ten men. Coach Owen Coyle had introduced changes at halftime, but they could not spark the revival his team desperately needed.

"Chennaiyin FC's inability to convert their opportunities has been a recurring issue this season, which has effectively cost them their shot at the playoffs," reported The Bridge, capturing the essence of their disappointing year. With this loss, their postseason hopes were crushed, leaving them scrambling to remedy their campaign with just one game left.

This significant win puts NorthEast United FC well poised for their next match against East Bengal FC on March 8, as they aim to finish the league phase strong, possibly aiming for greater heights within the playoffs. Chennaiyin FC, on the other hand, will host Jamshedpur FC on March 9, simply hoping to regain some pride after failing to meet expectations this season.

The Highlanders, under head coach Naushad Moosa, are celebrating their successful campaign as they look forward to the playoffs, showcasing the evolution this team has undergone since last year's Durand Cup triumph. Their performance against Chennaiyin FC serves as a reminder of their capabilities and potential as they prepare for the challenges awaiting them.
