North Korean Forces Struggle Against Drone Warfare

Outdated tactics lead to heavy losses for North Koreans amid Kursk Oblast conflict.

The situation in the Kursk Oblast has become increasingly challenging for North Korean forces, who find themselves ill-prepared for the realities of modern warfare.

Despite their recent human wave assaults aimed at regaining territory, North Korean soldiers have faced significant setbacks, particularly when confronting the advanced use of drone technology by Ukrainian forces.

After several attempts over the past week to take control of the Kursk Salient, these efforts have not only failed to achieve their objectives but have also exposed the troops’ lack of experience and tactics when faced with the persistent threat of drones. This struggle has left North Korean units suffering heavy losses, dramatically underlining their vulnerabilities.

According to military reporting, North Korean assaults were hampered primarily by their outdated doctrines and tactics which are deeply rooted in experiences dating back to the Korean War, over seventy years ago. The complex interplay of modern combat, especially the extensive use of drones, has proven to be particularly disastrous for the North Koreans, who underestimated the technological capabilities of their opponents.

Ukrainian forces have effectively utilized drones to not only gather intelligence but also to execute precision strikes against North Korean formations. This cutting-edge method of warfare has demonstrated glaring gaps in the preparation of North Korean troops, who, during their initial assaults, did not recognize drones as significant threats. They advanced slowly across open fields, making them easy targets for Ukrainian drones, which often exploited this misguided perception.

The debacle was compounded when North Korean soldiers attempted to respond to drone attacks seemingly at random. Instead of adopting evasive maneuvers or seeking cover, many soldiers panicked and engaged the drones with small arms fire, effectively placing themselves at greater risk. Reporting indicated instances where North Korean troops inadvertently harmed each other during this chaos, underlining their disarray and lack of coordination under fire.

This inability to properly adapt to drone warfare not only showcased their unpreparedness but also pointed to the need for urgent tactical training. North Korean commanders did make efforts to improve soldier awareness by setting up observation points and encouraging troops to look for drones. Unfortunately, without the necessary electronic warfare systems or countermeasures, these precautions had minimal impact on the constant drone assaults.

Combat footage has illustrated numerous North Korean failures to shield themselves from drone strikes, where the soldiers, rather than lying low or seeking protection, often gathered together on the periphery of forests. This tactical error meant they missed the opportunity to leverage the terrain to disrupt drone signals.

To exploit their enemy’s unfamiliarity with the battlefield, Ukrainian forces humorously attached small Christmas toys to their drones. This tactic not only disoriented North Korean soldiers but drew their focus away from the imminent threat. By the time these troops realized they were under attack, it was too late, leading to increased casualties.

A statement from South Korean Military Intelligence highlighted concerns over the North Korean military’s inability to adapt, attributing much of the heavy losses to their lack of familiarity with the open terrain typical of the Kursk region, which contrasts sharply with the more mountainous environment of Korea.

Looking forward, it appears both Russian and North Korean commanders may need to pause their operations to properly train their troops on counter-drone measures and rethink their offensive tactics. Without such changes, they risk incurring additional losses, which could delay the broader defensive strategies intended for the Kursk counteroffensive by several weeks or even months.

The outcomes of these harsh lessons from the battlefield will likely have lasting ramifications for North Korean military strategy moving forward, as their historical isolation continues to hinder their modernization efforts within the complex theater of modern warfare.
