Norsk E-Fuel And Partners Launch Project Alby For Sustainable Aviation Fuel

A new venture aims to produce over 80,000 tons of e-Fuel annually, marking significant strides toward decarbonizing aviation.

Norsk e-Fuel, Prime Capital, and RES are taking significant strides toward the future of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with their newly announced collaboration on Project Alby, located approximately 370 km north of Stockholm, Sweden. This groundbreaking initiative aims to produce at least 80,000 tons of e-Fuel annually, contributing substantially to the decarbonization of air travel.

Set to occupy a 14-hectare site, Project Alby stands as Norsk e-Fuel's first venture within Sweden, following similar initiatives established previously across Norway and Finland. The project's strategic location can benefit from the region's abundant renewable energy resources, which are expected to provide low-cost electricity for the production processes.

Each partner brings distinct strengths to the table. Norsk e-Fuel draws from its vast expertise in e-Fuel technology, Prime Capital leverages its experience within renewable infrastructure investments, and RES contributes its proven record of delivering large-scale renewable energy projects. "We are thrilled to join forces with Norsk e-Fuel on this transformative project," remarked Jens Walzner, Managing Director of Prime Capital. This collaboration signifies not only progress for the companies involved but also for Sweden's green energy ambitions.

Project Alby utilizes the Power-to-Liquid (PtL) process. This cutting-edge technology transforms water to hydrogen through renewable electricity, which is then combined with captured CO2 to create synthetic e-Kerosene, providing airlines with a sustainable alternative to traditional jet fuel.

With the aviation sector feeling the pressure to transition away from fossil fuels, initiatives like Project Alby have gained significant attention. According to the European Union's ReFuelEU initiative, synthetic fuels are expected to comprise at least 1.2% of supplies at EU airports by 2030 and 35% by 2050. This ambitious goal makes the production of e-Fuels more pivotal than ever.

Meanwhile, another player emerges within this ever-evolving SAF sector. Spark e-Fuels, based in Germany, has announced its plan to establish e-SAF production facilities utilizing low-cost renewable energy. Recently, the company secured €2.3 million ($2.4 million) funding led by climate-focused investor Nucleus Capital to kick-start its pilot production plant.

CEO Mathias Bösl outlined the unique technology Spark e-Fuels has patented: "We have a global data model... Our technology is able to vary the load of the chemical process, meaning it can run at full capacity if energy availability allows it, and reduce capacity dynamically when there is less energy available." This adaptability could make their manufacturing process more efficient and economically viable.

Stressing the significance of their high-efficiency processes, Bösl explained, "For conventional technologies, the first step only offers conversion of 50-60% of CO2 to syngas... Our syngas process reaches almost full conversion of CO2 and hydrogen, eliminating the need for recycle streams and significantly increasing energy efficiency and flexibility."

The push for e-fuels is gaining traction, with companies like Spark e-Fuels stepping up to fill demand not just from airlines but also from the wider chemical industry pressured to decarbonize rapidly.

Not to be left behind, Norsk e-Fuel is aggressively pursuing its strategic advancements to secure its place as a leader within the SAF production field. The company recently formed ties with aerospace giant Boeing, aiming to develop industrial-scale power-to-liquid facilities globally.

According to Norsk e-Fuel's CCO Lars Bjørn Larsen, "Boeing’s investment will... help mobilize the commercialization of SAF in the Nordics and across the world, increasing accessibility and availability for our customers as we help build a strong SAF ecosystem." Insight from airline partner Norwegian adds to the excitement, with CEO Geir Karlsen saying, "We are pleased to welcome Boeing on board... Their investment marks a significant milestone for Norsk e-Fuel and confirms the positive development we have had."

This confluence of partnerships and advancements leads to heightened optimism surrounding sustainable aviation fuel projects across Europe, promising successful, scalable solutions to the current carbon-intensive air travel industry. With the combined efforts of established renewable energy firms and advancements within new technologies, Project Alby exemplifies just how committed stakeholders are to executing the transition of aviation to lower-emission platforms.

Through these initiatives, the aviation industry takes one significant step closer to fulfilling the European Union's ambitious goals of achieving significant reductions in carbon emissions associated with air travel, showcasing how collaboration and innovation are fundamental to realizing these aspirations.
