NORAD Tracks Santa Claus's Journey Worldwide

Families enjoy tracking Santa's route this Christmas Eve thanks to NORAD's technology and tradition.

Every Christmas Eve, as children around the world await the arrival of gifts beneath the tree, excitement builds with the magic of NORAD Tracks Santa. This beloved annual tradition, which allows families to follow Santa Claus's path as he delivers presents, has its roots going back to 1955 when a misprinted advertisement invited children to call the North Pole.

Originally, the advertisement intended to provide the North Pole's contact number but mistakenly listed the number for the Continental Air Defense Command (now known as NORAD). Colonel Harry Shoup, who was on duty at the time, answered the influx of calls. Rather than shutting them down, he embraced the holiday spirit, telling children about Santa's whereabouts. This interaction spawned what is now known as NORAD Tracks Santa, transforming what could have been just another erroneous call line surprisingly became a cherished tradition.

Fast forward to today, and the NORAD program has embraced modern technology to heighten the adventure. Each year, on the evening of December 24, NORAD utilizes its radar and satellite systems, typically used for national defense purposes, to track Santa’s sleigh as it journeys across the globe. The same highly sophisticated sensors which monitor for missile launches now serve the joyous purpose of locating Santa Claus as he spreads holiday cheer.

Alongside their tracking services, NORAD provides interactive experiences for families. Their official website, www.noradsanta.org, is accessible in multiple languages and features colorful, engaging interfaces allowing users to visually follow Santa’s route. The platform updates users on how many presents Santa has delivered and enables them to explore the festive trail illuminated by his bright sleigh.

But the joy doesn't stop there! For those aspiring to get involved, NORAD Tracks Santa offers activities like games and Christmas-themed stories, providing entertainment for children as they anticipate the arrival of the jolly fat man. The app included not only tracks Santa's route but also has fun activities, making the wait much more enjoyable.

Google has even joined the festive fun with its own Santa Tracker, first launched in 2004. This alternative also allows families to follow along with Santa's adventures, incorporating various festive games, educational resources, and charming animations, heightening the overall holiday experience. Their version of the Santa Tracker has additional features, including celebrating Christmas around the world through delightful images shared globally.

This Christmas Eve, as Santa sets off from the North Pole with his sleigh loaded with approximately 8.2 billion presents, tens of millions of eager youngsters – and nostalgic adults – tune in to track his annual route globally.

The generosity of spirit and capacity for joy instilled by this tradition has led to the annual involvement of around 1,500 volunteers. They eagerly answer children's queries, which range from innocent questions about how Santa enters homes to imaginative inquiries about the workings of Santa's elves.

Throughout its evolution, the NORAD Tracks Santa program has continued to thrive, now bridging generations of families with its blend of technological innovation and heartfelt holiday spirit. It harkens back to the magic of Christmas and reminds us all of the joy, kindness, and hope emblematic of this season.

So, as you cozy up with loved ones this holiday season, don’t forget to check out the NORAD Tracks Santa website or app. Witness the magic for yourselves as millions around the world celebrate the custom of tracking Santa Claus, making each Christmas feel special and unique.
