Nong Khai Municipality Distributes Flood Relief Funds

Residents question fairness of financial aid distribution after flooding assistance announced

In a significant move to support those affected by recent flooding, the Municipality of Mueang Nong Khai has announced the distribution of financial assistance to 230 residents impacted by the disaster. This decision comes after a thorough review by the municipality's assistance committee, which convened on December 26, 2024, to evaluate requests for aid from citizens affected by the floods in September 2023.

According to local reports, the financial support varies greatly, with individuals receiving as little as 150 baht (approximately $4.50) and others receiving as much as 34,900 baht (around $1,050). The total amount allocated for this assistance program stands at 581,963 baht (about $16,500). This disparity in aid has raised questions among residents about the fairness of the distribution process.

On May 5, 2025, the Provincial Labor Office of Nong Khai organized an event aimed at educating people with disabilities about their entitlements, emphasizing the ongoing support available to them. The office has been actively providing assistance since January 26, 2024, and continues to encourage those who have not yet received aid to check their eligibility.

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities is responsible for facilitating this aid, which falls under Section 5.1 of the 2020 Act. As part of its efforts, the Mueang Nong Khai Municipality is conducting surveys to ensure that assistance reaches all eligible citizens.

In addition to the flood relief efforts, the government is also preparing for the upcoming registration of the "State Welfare Card" for the fiscal year 2025. This initiative aims to provide ongoing financial support to low-income individuals and families. The new round of registrations is set to open soon, with the government indicating that it is ready to announce details shortly.

As reported by the Ministry of Finance, the existing holders of the welfare card will continue to receive their benefits uninterrupted, despite some delays in the procurement process for the system developers. The monthly assistance for these cardholders totals 1,545 baht, which includes allocations for purchasing essential goods, transportation, and utility costs.

The breakdown of the monthly assistance includes 300 baht for consumer goods, 750 baht for transportation, 80 baht for gas, 100 baht for water, and 315 baht for electricity. However, it's important to note that these funds cannot be withdrawn as cash or accumulated for future months.

Looking ahead, the government anticipates a surge in new registrations for the welfare card, with estimates suggesting that up to 10 million individuals may apply. This includes those who have recently turned 18, as well as individuals who did not complete their registration in previous years.

The new eligibility criteria for the welfare card are expected to focus on genuinely assisting those in need. Preliminary guidelines suggest that applicants must be Thai citizens aged 18 and above, with an annual income not exceeding 100,000 baht. Additionally, total assets must also fall below this threshold, and individuals with certain financial obligations, such as credit cards or substantial loans, may be disqualified.

For those already registered, the government is encouraging updates to their information through the new "Tang Rat" Super App, which is designed to streamline the registration and verification processes. Users can easily register and confirm their identities through this mobile application, enhancing accessibility to government services.

In conclusion, as the Mueang Nong Khai Municipality continues to address the aftermath of the flooding and the government prepares for the next round of welfare card registrations, residents are urged to stay informed about their rights and available assistance. With ongoing efforts to support vulnerable populations, the local government aims to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.
