NJZ Pauses Performances Amid Legal Battle With Ador

The K-pop group formerly known as NewJeans takes a break from public activities following court ruling.

K-pop girl group NJZ announced it will take a break from performing in public following a stunning ruling by a South Korean court that has put the band in a legal bind with their former agency, Ador. The announcement came at the group's headline performance at the pop culture festival ComplexCon in Hong Kong on March 23, 2025, surprising fans who had gathered at AsiaWorld-Expo to see their idols perform.

During their performance, the NJZ members revealed their decision, which came just two days after the court ruled in favor of Ador, restricting the five-member group from engaging in independent activities until a contractual dispute is resolved. “It is very hard for us to say this. But this might be our last performance for a little while. Out of respect for the court’s decisions, we’ve decided to pause all our activities for now and it wasn’t an easy decision,” explained one of the group members on stage, visibly emotional in front of the crowd.

The ruling stemmed from a tense legal conflict that began last August when Min Hee-Jin, the group's mentor, was forcibly removed from her position at HYBE, the parent company of Ador. This sparked feelings of workplace discord within NJZ, with member Hanni later alleging that she experienced harassment while working with the label, as reported by the BBC.

In November 2024, NJZ announced they would terminate their contract amidst claims of mistreatment and inadequate support. A subsequent injunction filed by Ador sought to prohibit the band from pursuing independent efforts, thus leading to the current uncertainty surrounding their musical career.

“Honestly, we’ve known from the start that this journey wasn’t going to be easy—and even though we accept the court’s ruling and this whole process, we had to speak up to protect the values that we believe in,” added Danielle, one of the group's leading figures, during the emotional announcement.

The recent court ruling underscores the complexities artists can face in the K-pop industry, especially with powerful agencies like HYBE. Observers noted that being barred from independent activities could severely impede NJZ's potential outside projects, leaving them vulnerable to further contractual complications and penalties.

On social media, reactions were mixed. While many fans expressed deep disappointment, others weren't surprised by the ruling. “Not surprising. You don’t just walk away from a contract, especially with HYBE’s power,” one user commented on a popular platform. Another follower speculated, “I wonder if they can work independently again one day. Maybe after the original contract period is finished?” This sentiment contours the reality many artists face, caught between contractual obligations and their artistic aspirations.

As NJZ has solidified its identity as a music group, debuting in 2022 and quickly rising to fame with hits like “Hype Boy” and “OMG,” their break comes at a pivotal time in their careers. Fans of the group have followed their journey closely, expressing unwavering support as the members navigate these troubling waters. NJZ, who recently rebranded themselves from their original title of New Jeans, performed new material including a song titled “Pit Stop” during their time at ComplexCon, further showcasing their commitment to their craft despite the legal controversies.

The group’s relationship with Ador, however, has seen a significant rupture, making their future uncertain. The members have stated their intention to contest the ruling through an objection process, with a hearing scheduled for April 3, 2025. “This decision did not sufficiently take into account the fact that the members’ trust in ADOR has been completely destroyed,” they declared, voicing their frustrations with the agency.

Despite the ongoing struggles with their former agency, NJZ’s resolve to maintain their dignity and pursue their truth has resonated with stakeholders and audiences alike. Their recent experiences highlight key issues that have surfaced within the industry: the struggle for control over one’s career and the impact of legal entanglements.

The impact of NJZ's announcement has sent ripples through the K-pop community, reinforcing the need for fair treatment and respect for artists’ rights in an industry often characterized by intense scrutiny and management control. As the group navigates these challenges, their fans remain eagerly hopeful for a future where they can reclaim their artistic freedom. The collective journey of NJZ encapsulates the complex dynamics within K-pop and opens conversations about agency, autonomy, and responsibility.

With the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry, the band’s next steps could inspire changes within or beyond the K-pop realm, prompting agents, agencies, and fans alike to rethink what it means to support artists holistically. Until then, NJZ’s hiatus serves as both a necessary break and a profound moment of reflection for both the group and their dedicated followers.
