NJ Ashton Hosts Community Barbeque After M1 Motorway Spill

A scrap metal spill on the M1 Pacific Motorway has created chaos for motorists and prompted NJ Ashton, the transport company involved, to take swift action. On May 2, 2025, a truck operated by NJ Ashton lost its load of approximately 800 kilograms of metal debris, which scattered over a 25-kilometer stretch between Palmdale and the Mooney Mooney Bridge. This incident resulted in significant traffic delays and left more than 1,000 motorists reporting tyre damage, triggering a flood of insurance claims.

General manager of NJ Ashton, Daniel Falconer, expressed the company’s commitment to addressing the situation. In a statement, he said, “We’re taking full responsibility for what’s happened and are very sorry for any damage and disruption that’s been caused.” The company mobilized its team immediately after the incident to assist the affected drivers and manage the influx of claims.

In an effort to foster community goodwill, NJ Ashton has announced plans to host a free barbeque for those impacted by the spill. Scheduled for May 9, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 47 Oaks Café in Peats Ridge Village, the event aims to provide a space for affected individuals to voice their concerns and receive support. “All are welcome to come down – we’ll have our staff there, an employee from our insurance and our driver. There’ll be sausages and steak sandwiches,” Falconer noted.

The barbeque is not just a gesture of goodwill; it also highlights the company’s efforts to engage with the local community, particularly in Peats Ridge, which was heavily impacted by the incident. Falconer emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses, stating that everything for the barbeque will be sourced locally.

As investigations into the cause of the spill continue, Falconer mentioned that they are expected to take three to four weeks. The insurance company has set up a hotline through Sedgwick to handle claims, and Falconer revealed that approximately 1,000 claims have already been lodged. While most claims appear legitimate, he acknowledged concerns regarding a few potentially fraudulent claims. “We’re getting a few dodgies here and there, people who were travelling the other way and all that sort of stuff, so we’ve got to sift through them,” he explained.

The estimated damage bill from the incident is projected to be between $1 million and $2 million, although Falconer noted that the final tally will depend on the outcome of the claims process. “They believe it will be somewhere between $1-2 million but they’ll need to go through all of the claims,” he stated.

Local automotive repair businesses have also felt the impact of the spill. Courtney Nipsalla of Goodyear Autocare Gosford reported a surge in service requests immediately following the incident. “We were just inundated straight away,” he said, describing how customers began arriving unannounced for tyre inspections and repairs. Nipsalla confirmed that the business had to source additional tyre stock from Sydney to meet the increased demand and warned motorists of the potential long-term risks from embedded metal shards.

The incident has raised broader questions about transport liability and risk management in the industry. With ongoing consultations regarding the Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry (MVIRI) Code of Conduct, the timing of the incident could potentially influence discussions on safety and compliance regulations. The Code Administration Committee has extended the public feedback deadline to June 23, allowing stakeholders to voice their opinions on the current practices.

Meanwhile, NSW Police are conducting their own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the spill, focusing on whether any safety or compliance breaches occurred. The truck driver involved in the incident is currently off duty as investigations proceed. Falconer mentioned that the driver is understandably upset and has been sidelined since the accident. “The driver himself, he’s devastated,” he said, noting that the driver may face a fine pending the investigation's conclusion.

As NJ Ashton navigates this challenging situation, the company is determined to support those affected and ensure that all claims are handled fairly and efficiently. The community barbeque not only serves as a means of outreach but also reflects the company’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the wake of the incident.
