Nitish Kumar Attempts To Touch PM Modi's Feet Again

For the third time this year, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar tries to show respect to PM Modi during public events, raising eyebrows and sparking discussions.

Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, known for his often surprising political maneuvers, stirred the political pot once again when he attempted to touch Prime Minister Narendra Modi's feet during a public event. This incident, which occurred on November 13, 2024, at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Darbhanga, marks the third such occasion this year where Kumar has tried to show reverence to Modi. The gesture elicited varied reactions among political circles and the public alike, drawing attention and mocking commentary on social media.

This latest attempt unfolded as both leaders attended the event, which was not only significant for the healthcare sector but also served as a political platform for Modi to express his commitment to development projects across Bihar. When Kumar, who is 73 years old, bowed down with folded hands, Modi was quick to stop him, demonstrating the delicate dance of respect and rivalry existing between the two.

Kumar's attempts at humility are not completely new; they have become somewhat of a pattern this year. Earlier, at the Central Hall of Parliament back in June, he surprised onlookers by trying to perform the same gesture, following another occasion during a Lok Sabha election campaign event back in April. Each time, Modi has intervened, deflecting the gesture, which adds layers to their political relationship—one of both respect and complex rivalry.

At the event, Modi laid the groundwork for multiple projects, including the new AIIMS, alongside infrastructure developments projected at around Rs 12,000 crore. Addressing the crowd, Modi emphasized his government's focus on bolstering healthcare services and supporting economically disadvantaged families. The AIIMS project is seen as pivotal for transforming healthcare access not just for residents of Darbhanga, but also for those hailing from Kosi and Seemanchal, as well as neighboring regions, including parts of West Bengal and even Nepal.

"This AIIMS will be a game-changer for our healthcare system, providing advanced medical services close to home," Modi stated. The Prime Minister's comments reflected the broader vision behind the initiative, aimed at reducing the strain on existing medical facilities and addressing the unique health challenges faced by the population.

During his address, Modi also highlighted the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which he reported has already provided free treatments to over four crore people, cumulatively saving families approximately Rs 1.25 lakh crore. This initiative aims to tackle significant health challenges faced by the lower and middle classes, including malnutrition and limited access to healthcare facilities, issues intricately tied to the socio-economic conditions of the region.

While Kumar's gestures of humility have raised eyebrows, they also reflect the nuances of Indian politics where respect and alliance can often blend with power dynamics. The interactions between these two leaders, particularly within the spheres of healthcare advancement and social development initiatives, certainly play out against the backdrop of their curt political history.

Modi’s administration has often focused on healthcare reforms, and the establishment of AIIMS is set to ease the burden on regional hospitals, where patients have long traveled great distances for suitable care. This infrastructural investment is expected to bolster healthcare services throughout North Bihar, which has historically lagged behind more developed regions.

To conclude, Kumar’s repeated gestures of trying to honor Modi might hint at underlying tactical alignments, as he navigates the complex pathways of Bihar’s political atmosphere. Observers will surely keep their eyes on how this peculiar dynamic between the two leaders evolves, especially as the state approaches the upcoming assembly polls.
