Nishioka And Mochizuki Face Tough Openings At Australian Tournaments

Japanese tennis players encounter challenges at Adelaide and Australian Open qualifiers as they gear up for major competitions.

Japanese tennis players faced mixed fortunes at recent tournaments, signaling both the potential and the challenges they encounter as they gear up for the upcoming Australian Open. At the Adelaide International, Yosuke Nishioka, ranked 63rd worldwide, suffered a heartbreaking defeat against local favorite Thanasi Kokkinakis, who is ranked 77th and received a wild card entry to the event.

The match, held on January 6, showcased Nishioka's determination as he pushed Kokkinakis to the limit, losing with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 after nearly two hours of tense play. Although disappointed with the outcome, Nishioka took to social media the following day to express his outlook on the match. “I lost, but it was a fruitful day,” he reflected, indicating his intent to draw positives from the experience.

This encounter marked the first meeting at the tour level between the two competitors, but their paths have crossed before. Back in 2014, during the US Open qualifiers, Nishioka secured victory over Kokkinakis. Fast forward to the current matchup, Nishioka started on the back foot by losing the first set after being unable to capitalize on breakpoints, and Kokkinakis showcased his powerful serve with seven aces.

The second set saw Nishioka rally for his second win of the tournament, but it was not enough to secure the win as he lost two breaks earlier during the final set. Despite the exit from the tournament, Nishioka remains focused on his preparation for the Australian Open, which starts on January 12.

At the same time, Shintaro Mochizuki, who has shown promising performance lately, faced his own ups and downs. The 21-year-old reached the Australian Open qualifiers but fell short against Alexander Kachmazov, ranked 197th, losing 3-6, 6-7 (1-7) on January 7.

Mochizuki had entered the tournament feeling buoyed, having recently claimed his second Challenger title at the BNC Tennis Open after nearly two years without victory. His success had pushed him up 65 spots to rank 170 as of January 6. Despite being seeded 22nd for the qualifiers, he struggled against Kachmazov, allowing three early breaks and failing to recover even after breaking back to level the score with Kachmazov's serve.

Looking to the future, both players are set to learn from these experiences as they head to the Australian Open. Nishioka hopes to adapt his game against higher-ranked players after facing tough competition. “It was tough yesterday. There was about 15°C of temperature difference, and the ball wasn’t flying as well. I stayed with the same strings throughout the match,” he mentioned about the conditions he faced.

This season, as they continue to navigate the competitive terrain of international tennis, Nishioka and Mochizuki will look to build upon what they have learned to bring their best games to the grand stage. Their resilience and growth will play key roles as they set their eyes on future successes on the ATP circuit.
