Nintendo Begins Sending Switch 2 Pre-Order Invites Today

Fans eagerly await their chance to secure the new console ahead of its June launch.

Nintendo has officially commenced sending out pre-order invites for its highly anticipated Switch 2 console, a move that has sparked excitement among gaming enthusiasts. The invites are being dispatched via email to individuals who signed up between May 8 and May 12, 2025. This new opportunity comes after a chaotic initial round of pre-orders that took place on April 24, 2025, during which many fans faced significant challenges.

Initially, pre-orders for the Switch 2 were available through major retailers in the United States, including GameStop, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target. However, these pre-orders were marred by severe technical issues as retailers struggled to cope with overwhelming demand. Many fans found themselves unable to secure a console, as supplies sold out almost instantaneously. Now, with the upcoming launch date set for June 5, 2025, Nintendo is offering another chance for fans to secure their consoles directly.

To qualify for the pre-order invites, players must have maintained a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online subscription and logged at least 50 hours of gameplay on the original Switch. Those who receive an invite will have a 72-hour window to claim their console. New invites will continue to be sent out until May 12, 2025, or until supplies last. This system aims to prioritize dedicated Nintendo fans and combat scalpers who have made securing a console increasingly difficult.

As part of the pre-order process, invitees will also have the chance to pre-order accessories, including the new Switch 2 GameCube controller, which will be available exclusively through Nintendo's website. While those who receive invites will get first dibs, the controller will also be available to all Switch Online subscribers starting May 13, 2025, assuming any remain in stock.

In a twist that many fans have found confusing, the pre-order lottery system has drawn mixed reactions. Some users have reported difficulty navigating the process, with unclear messaging regarding the status of their invites. According to Twitter user Wario64, invitations may not always reach those selected, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the pre-order process. Furthermore, the terminology used by Nintendo, distinguishing between "required" and "requested" invites, has left many consumers puzzled.

For example, if a user receives an email indicating an "Invite requested," it typically means their invitation to pre-order is imminent. Conversely, an "Invite required" message could imply either that they were not selected or that their invitation is still on the way. This lack of clarity has prompted discussions among users, with some finding success in securing their pre-orders despite not receiving explicit notifications.

As the pre-order situation develops, the gaming community is keeping a close eye on stock levels in both the UK and the US. In the UK, retailers like Currys and Smyths have begun dropping stock, with Currys offering the Mario Kart World bundle at a premium price. Meanwhile, Smyths has made a more affordable standard model available. Both retailers are experiencing a surge in interest, indicating strong demand for the new console.

However, the situation in the US remains more complicated. Major retailers have not been able to replenish their stock since the initial pre-order rush, and many fans are left waiting for more opportunities to secure a console. Nintendo's invite system is viewed as a potential solution to these supply issues, but it remains to be seen how effectively it will address the overwhelming demand.

Nintendo has also issued a warning regarding potential price increases due to tariff-related issues. Shuntaro Furukawa, the company's president, stated that while they are working quickly to mitigate these impacts, any drastic changes could affect future prices. This adds an additional layer of urgency for fans looking to secure their Switch 2 at the current price of $449.99 for the standard console and $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle.

The Switch 2 is set to launch with a host of new features and titles, including several high-profile games that will be available on launch day. Titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo Switch 2 Edition) and Mario Kart World are among the anticipated releases, alongside a range of accessories designed to enhance the gaming experience.

In addition to the console's launch, Nintendo is also preparing to release a new line of amiibo figures, which are expected to hit shelves in June 2025. These figures will be compatible with both the new console and the original Switch, providing fans with additional ways to engage with their favorite Nintendo franchises.

As the countdown to the June 5 launch continues, Nintendo fans are encouraged to stay vigilant regarding their pre-order status and to check their email for any updates from the company. The excitement surrounding the Switch 2 is palpable, and with the potential for more stock drops and pre-order opportunities, the coming weeks are sure to be eventful for gamers everywhere.
