Nigeria has bestowed its prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), the second-highest national honor, on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Abuja. This honor not only marks Modi as the second foreign dignitary to receive such recognition after the late Queen Elizabeth II, who received it back in 1969, but it also highlights the deepening ties between Nigeria and India.
Upon receiving the award on November 17, 2024, from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Modi expressed his gratitude, stating, "Honoured to be conferred with the ‘Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger’ Award by Nigeria. I accept it with great humility and dedicate it to the people of India and the friendship of India and Nigeria." This distinction is his 17th international honour, reflecting his growing stature on the global diplomatic stage.
Modi’s visit to Nigeria is historic as it is the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 17 years. The Indian Premier's arrival was marked by ceremonial events, including the presentation of the 'Key to the City' of Abuja by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Minister for Federal Capital Territory, who emphasized the trust and respect the Nigerian populace holds for him. This key symbolizes the warm welcome and confidence bestowed upon Modi by Nigeria.
The bilateral meeting between Modi and President Tinubu took place at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, where discussions aimed at strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two countries took center stage. Modi highlighted the importance of India's relationship with Nigeria, stating, "We give high priority to our strategic partnership with Nigeria. I am confident we can begin a new chapter following our talks."
India and Nigeria have enjoyed over six decades of diplomatic relations, characterized by cooperation on various fronts, including economic development, security, and trade. Both leaders emphasized the need to address challenges such as terrorism, piracy, and drug trafficking, affirming their commitment to joint operations against these issues.
During their discussions, the leaders signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation across different sectors. These agreements include initiatives focused on cultural exchanges and customs cooperation. Modi also pledged to send 20 tonnes of relief supplies to Nigeria to assist those affected by recent flooding incidents.
The strategic partnership, bolstered by India’s significant investments and support for Nigeria’s development, has seen Indian private sector investment exceeding $27 billion across various industries. Indian companies are recognized as the second-largest employers in Nigeria after the federal government, depicting the strong economic ties shared between the nations.
Prime Minister Modi's admiration for Nigeria's role within the African Union was evident as he noted its positive influence on the continent, especially following the inclusion of the AU as a permanent member of the G20 during India's presidency. The two nations are expected to advance discussions on several fronts, including energy, technology, health, and education, throughout Modi's tour.
This tour will also include visits to Brazil and Guyana, emphasizing India's commitment to strengthen relations not only with Nigeria but across various global partners. Modi's recognition by Nigeria signifies India's growing influence and the importance of its relationships within Africa, illustrating how diplomatic engagements can yield substantial socio-economic benefits for both countries involved.
Modi’s visit conveys significant potential for enhanced cooperation between Nigeria and India, ensuring continued collaboration aimed at mutual growth and support, particularly as both nations navigate the complex challenges of the global geopolitical arena.
