Nicolae Mitea Celebrates 40 And Remembers Ajax Days

The former Ajax winger reflects on his journey and cherished memories from an impactful career.

Nicolae Mitea, the former Ajax winger, celebrated his milestone 40th birthday on Monday, March 24, 2025, reflecting fondly on his time in Amsterdam and his life in Bucharest where he lives with his eight-year-old daughter. "Thank you, thank you very much," he expressed with a hint of nostalgia as he recounted his journey from an eager 18-year-old joining Ajax to the vibrant life he leads today.

Having hung up his professional boots over a decade ago, Mitea has found a peaceful existence but misses being on the football pitch. During our conversation, Mitea shared, "I take it easy, live a relaxed life, and spend a lot of time with my daughter." He has intentionally kept a low profile in recent years, appearing occasionally on Romanian television to discuss football. Yet, he admitted, "I’ve been asked several times to coach children, but now, I don’t see myself doing that yet.”

Mitea's professional journey began in 2003 when he joined Ajax from FC Dinamo and eventually returned to Romania in 2008. He recounted his experiences from his initial season with Ajax under the leadership of renowned coach Ronald Koeman, where the team clinched the national title. That year was exceptional for Mitea as he played 23 league matches, scoring seven goals, which greatly contributed to Ajax’s success.

Among his many memories, one stands out—the assist to Rafael van der Vaart’s stunning backheel goal in the Klassieker against Feyenoord. "Yes, of course. I still see that moment often," Mitea smiled as he recalled that pivotal match. However, he holds a particularly cherished memory of his winning goal against PSV that season, which secured the championship for Ajax. "I was just put on as a substitute, scored the winner, and that helped us become champions. It is by far my most important goal in an Ajax shirt," he reminisced.

Mitea's love for Ajax remains palpable. As he said, "The club and the people are truly in my heart for the rest of my life." He expressed that his time at Ajax has significantly impacted his life, stating, "Ajax changed my life, I dare to say." The former player often reflects on the bonds he built during his time in the Netherlands. "I miss my house in Ouderkerk and all my colleagues. That was such a wonderful time, and I only realize it now," he added.

He also remembered the advice of legendary Ajax figure Ruud Krol, who served as a mentor during his formative years at the club. "He was like a father to me. I am so grateful to him; he always ensured I was strong. He said, ‘Niki, you are a diamond, but take good care of yourself because diamonds are fragile. If they break, they are worth nothing.’ I loved him as I loved my family,” said Mitea, highlighting the profound influence Krol had on his development.

With aspirations still tied to Ajax, Mitea remarked, "I hope Ajax continues to do well, wins against PSV on March 30, and becomes champions." His heartfelt connection to his former club is evident, making it clear that Ajax will always hold a special place in his heart.

In closing, Mitea expressed a desire to revisit Amsterdam, reconnecting with friends and former teammates. "I would love to come to Amsterdam in the future and see the people from my time again," he said, underlining the enduring relationship he maintains with both his personal past and his illustrious football career.
