Đồng Hới Airport Upgrade Project Accelerates Amid Growing Demand

Investment of nearly 1.844 trillion VND aims to boost regional growth and tourism opportunities.

The Đồng Hới Airport upgrade is set to proceed at a rapid pace following the recent meeting between Quảng Bình Province leaders and the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV). This ambitious project, titled "Construction of Passenger Terminal T2 and Expansion of Aircraft Parking Area at Đồng Hới Airport," entails substantial investments totaling nearly 1.844 trillion VND. The initiative aims not only to improve infrastructure but also to bolster the region's economic development.

During the meeting on February 28, the leaders focused on the project's progress, with Quảng Bình Provincial Party Secretary Lê Ngọc Quang emphasizing the area’s promising potential for tourism, logistics, and services, especially due to its strategic location along the North-South corridor and the East-West Economic Corridor. The expectation is high, as the airport is categorized as one of the region's bottlenecks, impeding growth and development opportunities.

According to ACV President Vũ Thế Phiệt, the overall project consists of two main components: the construction of a new passenger terminal (Component 1) and the expansion of the aircraft parking area (Component 2). The groundbreaking for Component 2 took place on August 15, and the completion deadline is set for April 30. The development of Terminal T2 will commence simultaneously, with construction expected to last between 12 to 14 months.

"We are currently moving swiftly through the necessary procedures to relocate the air traffic control tower, which is being impeded by the new terminal's construction," noted Phiệt, who expressed confidence about collaborative efforts between the province and ACV. These partnerships are designated to expedite the remaining processes and make sure everything is on time.

With traffic demands on the rise, Quảng Bình's leaders see the urgent need for upgraded infrastructure to not only meet current needs but also to accommodate future growth. The existing Đồng Hới Airport is nearing its capacity, compelling officials to act quickly to avoid stalling progress. By pushing forward with the terminal and parking expansions, the project serves as both infrastructure improvement and economic stimulus.

"The upgrade plan is not merely about steel and concrete; it’s about unlocking potential—boosting capacity and positioning to attract invetsments," stated Quang. The provincial secretary called for ACV to uphold their commitment to ensuring timely completion of the project and requested monthly updates on progress to guarantee they meet deadlines and quality standards.

To facilitate the execution of the project, Quang announced the establishment of a task force within the province’s government led by the Deputy Chair of the Quảng Bình People's Committee. This team will assist contractors and investors, ensuring all necessary actions are clear and focused. Each month, updates will track the implementation of plans as well as results, fostering transparency and effectively meeting the province's new development phase.

Beyond enhancing the airport, officials are working with airline companies and major tourism enterprises to increase flights and establish new domestic and international routes to Quảng Bình. This move is aimed at enriching the travel experience and increasing the operational efficiency of Đồng Hới Airport.

The construction of Terminal T2 and the expansion of aircraft parking areas at Đồng Hới Airport signify more than just infrastructural advancement. They are poised to boost Quảng Bình’s standing as it embraces the surge of investments and strives for sustainable growth.

Currently, various approving authorities are engaged to fast-track all remaining procedures linked to the airport's upgrade. The leadership at ACV expresses optimism about working collaboratively with the province and the Ministry of Construction to seamlessly navigate through the remaining challenges.

Node: It is this collaborative spirit and urgency from the local government alongside ACV, combined with the economic potential of Quảng Bình, which will dictate the success of this elevation strategy for Đồng Hới Airport. The construction of the new terminal and improvements to the parking area mean not only growth for air travel but also greater accessibility to this stunning region, rich with cultural heritage and natural beauty.

With the successful completion envisioned by the end of 2026, Đồng Hới Airport is set to become the gateway to Quảng Bình’s vibrant future, embodying excitement and optimism this project inspires.
