Nexon is set to make waves in the gaming industry with the simultaneous release of two highly anticipated titles, 'Mabinogi Mobile' and 'Perseus: Cain', on March 27 and 28, 2025, respectively. This strategic launch aims to capture a broad spectrum of the gaming market, especially during a month considered critical for evaluating the year’s initial success.
'Mabinogi Mobile', launching on March 27, is adapted from Nexon’s beloved PC online game, 'Mabinogi'. This new version seeks to expand its universe into mobile platforms after eight years of development and an investment of 100 billion won. Launched initially in 2004, the original game has been cherished for its unique world and free play style, enabling players to engage in varied gameplay from combat to crafting. Nexon is investing heavily in modernizing this classic, transitioning the original game to Unreal Engine 5 as part of their 'Mabinogi Eternity' project aimed at refreshing the game for contemporary audiences.
The storyline of 'Mabinogi Mobile' is based on the popular ‘Goddess Descent’ scenario, enriched with characters and locations from the 'Mabinogi Heroes'. Players will be able to experience the game’s unique fantasy life through various activities such as fishing, part-time jobs, and social interactions, aiming to preserve the essence of what made the original game so enchanting. Kim Dong-geon, head of the development team, emphasized, "The most important point was giving users the fun of becoming the main character of the story, which has been passed down from the original."
In anticipation of the launch, Nexon aims to create a game that allows players to live out their own unique adventures within the familiar yet newly crafted world. The engagement strategy includes a new cooperative mode, named 'Grand Melee', where four players can team up to solve puzzles and confront monsters.
Just a day later, on March 28, players can immerse themselves in 'Perseus: Cain', a hardcore action RPG set within the 'Dungeon & Fighter' universe. This title introduces players to the character Cain, a general of the Phong Rose Empire and a major adversary in the Ozma Raid. Set 800 years before the original timeline, the game emphasizes exploration, challenge, and an immersive narrative. Lee Jun-ho, the creative director, stated that they wanted players to feel the growth and engagement in their combat experience, aiming for a balance between strategic depth and action. "I hope players feel the change in genre as they progress, experiencing the thrill of combat and accomplishment,” he said.
These releases mark a new chapter for Nexon as they celebrate the 21st anniversary of 'Mabinogi' and the forthcoming 20th anniversary of 'Dungeon & Fighter'. This dual release embodies Nexon’s broader effort to leverage its intellectual property (IP) strengths. Co-CEO Kang Dae-hyun had previously indicated the emphasis on strengthening IP and franchise power for expanded influence and market reach, which includes ‘MapleStory’, ‘Dungeon & Fighter’, and ‘Mabinogi’ among others.
Nexon has strategically chosen March for these launches, as the month is critical for gauging the first half of the year’s performance. The gaming industry closely watches new releases during this period as they can significantly influence market trends and consumer interest. By releasing these two titles, Nexon not only reaches out to its existing fanbase but also aims to tap into new player demographics across different genres and platforms.
Additionally, the company has been actively maintaining and updating its existing titles, aimed at enhancing the overall gaming experience and solidifying its market position. Nexon recorded an impressive 4 trillion won in sales last year, reflecting its strong presence and influence in the gaming industry.
Furthermore, Nexon continues to nurture other potential games within its portfolio, as seen in recent updates for 'The Finals' and preparations for new titles like 'Project Overkill' and 'Dungeon & Fighter: Arad'. These initiatives aim to craft compelling narratives and sustain player engagement, ensuring Nexon remains competitive in a rapidly evolving global market.
With these strategic launches, Nexon demonstrates its commitment to innovation and expansion, poised to take a leading role both domestically and internationally in the gaming landscape.
