Fans of Newcastle United can breathe a little easier as their team nears reinforcements, with injury updates on key players Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier coming straight from manager Eddie Howe. With the Magpies set to clash against West Ham this coming Monday, the mood is cautiously optimistic, thanks to recent training successes.
Callum Wilson, who has yet to make an appearance this season due to persistent hamstring and back issues, seems to be on the mend. Howe was upbeat during his press briefing, noting, "He’s doing well. We anticipate he’s going to train with the group today. Whether he’s quite there for West Ham let’s see; there’s a chance he could be involved but we need to get through the next few days.” Howe emphasized the importance of Wilson's full recovery, stating, "I think the most important thing is Callum does come back and when he does, he’s in a good place to contribute and to make a difference."
Meanwhile, Kieran Trippier, who has been sidelined since October 5 due to his own hamstring troubles, appears to be closer to re-entering the fray. Howe described Trippier as having trained well and looked sharp following his first session back. "He’s slightly closer I’d say. He trained yesterday, felt good, had no ill effects and looked sharp. But it was the first day of training, so again, we’re right at the end of the rehab and need to navigate the last few days carefully,” Howe elaborated.
Despite the lack of the two pivotal players, Newcastle has managed to maintain momentum, racking up three consecutive wins across all competitions. With this success, Howe has indicated he’s not eager to rush Wilson and Trippier back as he aims to keep the squad fit for the long haul.
While the returns of Wilson and Trippier are anticipated, Newcastle will also cope with the long-term absence of Emil Krafth, who underwent surgery for a collarbone injury. Howe described this setback as “a big blow” for the squad, particularly with the busy festive schedule approaching.
Previously, Newcastle's form prior to the break featured impressive victories against Chelsea, Arsenal, and Nottingham Forest, signaling the potential for continued success should the team manage to return to full strength. The international break saw players returning with noteworthy accomplishments, including Anthony Gordon scoring his first goal for England, and young talents like Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento making their debuts.
The upcoming match against West Ham is set to be another test for the Magpies, who aim to capitalize on their recent form. Given the previous seasons' near chaos against West Ham—especially the thrilling 4-3 encounter—the team recognizes the need to keep their heads and aim for consistency.
All eyes will certainly be on the training ground over the coming days. Coach Howe and fans alike are hoping for positive news as the team sharpens up for what promises to be a key fixture against their London rivals. Keep your fingers crossed!
