The Newcastle Show, one of the region's most beloved events, returns this year from February 28 to March 2, 2025, bringing with it over 120 years of tradition and community celebration. Located at the Newcastle Showground, this year’s show promises to deliver classic family fun alongside exciting new activities.
According to event organizer Britt-Marie Osborne, the Newcastle Show has something for everyone, drawing nearly every family with fond memories from their childhood. "Nearly every person can recall their childhood from when they went to the show, and that's never changed. We may have different programs and different activities, but it's always about the rides, the entertainment, the fairy floss, and showbags," she mentioned.
This year's festivities will run from 9 AM to 10 PM on both Friday and Saturday, February 28 and March 1, and from 9 AM to 5 PM on Sunday, March 2. Tickets are priced at $30 for adults and $20 for children, students, and those eligible for concession prices. The show features various beloved events, including cooking competitions, sheep shearing, woodworking displays, carnival rides, equestrian events, and live music.
Adding to the excitement, some highlight events are structured to be especially engaging this year. Ms. Osborne expressed her enthusiasm for the epic fire performance happening on Friday and Saturday evenings. "From 8:30 PM on both days, performers will wield flaming torches, spin fire hoops, and dazzle audiences with explosive effects," she said. Visitors can also expect to see racing pigs and the ever-popular doggy day out competition as cute additions to the roster of events.
Musical entertainment will include local favorites such as Love That Hat performing on Friday night, along with the talented Jemma Beech and The Viper Creek Band taking the stage on Saturday. On the same days, attendees can enjoy the horsemanship performance by Kate Clancy, which will integrate live music for added flair.
Gerry Harvey, the co-founder of Harvey Norman, will be officially opening the show, marking his inaugural experience at running agricultural shows. "I think if you're a kid born in a country town, there's a pull back there," Harvey said, reflecting on his own roots. "It's part of their education. It's a must-do. It's a very important part of the community.” His presence is particularly noteworthy as he and Harvey Norman CEO Katie Page seek to bring excitement and recognition to the event.
While the show’s activities remain rooted in local traditions, new and innovative elements have been embraced to appeal to both families and visitors. This year's inclusion of state-of-the-art carnival rides and diverse food options highlights the show’s commitment to blending tradition with modern twists. Attendees can also explore animal displays, featuring everything from farm animals to reptiles, providing educational experiences and hands-on interaction for all ages.
"We’re not just about entertainment; we want to educate attendees through interactive experiences," explained Ms. Osborne. Educational exhibits will allow families to learn about farming, agriculture, and caring for animals, emphasizing the importance of such events for children living in urban centers.
The weather forecast for the weekend is promising, with temperatures expected to hover between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius across the three days. Those planning to attend should be aware of potential light rain on Friday and Saturday, but overall, conditions appear favorable for outdoor festivities.
Aside from entertainment, the Newcastle Showground will host local candidates from the One Nation party on February 28 and March 1, where community members can meet with them and discuss pressing local issues. This engagement is part of the show's focus on fostering community connections and making residents’ voices heard. Candidates Warwick Stacey, Arnon Wither, and Dr. Barry Reed will be present to share their visions for the future.
With these varied offerings, the Newcastle Show aims to attract between 40,000 to 50,000 attendees, forging connections through shared experiences and excitement. Its lineup of activities holds to family tradition yet embraces modern inclusive fun, keeping the spirit of the Newcastle Show vibrant and alive.
For years, the Newcastle Show has served as more than just entertainment—it remains a cornerstone of the local community. Ms. Osborne summarized it perfectly when she expressed hope for attendees: "We want everyone to have fun, make memories, and take part in celebrating our Hunter region. It’s going to be something everyone can enjoy!" The Newcastle Show is ready to kick off its grand celebration, welcoming all to partake from February 28 to March 2. Don’t miss your chance to join the festivities and create lasting memories with family and friends at this year’s show!
