New Zealand Outclasses Pakistan With 73-Run Victory

Mark Chapman shines with a century while Muhammad Abbas sets record on debut

In a thrilling encounter at McLean Park, Napier, New Zealand triumphed over Pakistan by 73 runs in the first One Day International (ODI) of the three-match series on Saturday, March 29, 2025. Mark Chapman was the star of the show, scoring a magnificent 132 runs off 111 balls, while Nathan Smith's exceptional bowling performance, taking four wickets for 60 runs, proved crucial in securing the victory for the home side.

New Zealand set an imposing target of 344 runs after being put to bat first. Despite a rocky start, where they found themselves at 50 for 3, Chapman’s innings, which included 13 boundaries and four sixes, helped stabilize the innings. He formed a formidable partnership of 199 runs for the fourth wicket with Daryl Mitchell, who contributed a solid 76 runs off 84 balls. This partnership was instrumental in lifting New Zealand to a total of 344-9 by the end of their 50 overs.

On the other hand, Pakistan's chase began promisingly as they reached 249 for 3, needing just 96 runs with more than 11 overs remaining. Babar Azam, leading the batting effort, scored 78 runs from 83 deliveries, while Salman Ali Agha played a commendable knock of 58 runs off 48 balls. The two batsmen had built a strong partnership, putting on 85 runs for the fourth wicket.

However, the match took a dramatic turn when Babar's dismissal to William O'Rourke triggered a catastrophic collapse for Pakistan. They lost their last seven wickets for a mere 22 runs, ultimately being bowled out for 271 in the 44th over. This collapse was spearheaded by Nathan Smith, whose bowling proved too hot to handle for the lower order, as he claimed three wickets in quick succession.

Adding to the day's excitement, debutant Muhammad Abbas made headlines by setting a world record for the fastest half-century on ODI debut, reaching the milestone in just 24 balls. Abbas, born in Lahore, Pakistan, scored 52 runs off 26 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes. His achievement broke the previous record held by India's Krunal Pandya, who had reached his fifty in 26 balls against England in 2021.

Despite the loss, Pakistan's bowling attack had moments of brilliance, particularly from Akif Javed, who took 2 wickets for 55 runs on his debut, and Irfan Khan, who captured 3 wickets for 51 runs in five overs. However, the inability of the lower order to support the top order proved costly.

With this victory, New Zealand takes a 1-0 lead in the series, and the teams will clash again in the second ODI scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, 2025, in Hamilton. Both teams will be looking to make adjustments, especially Pakistan, who will aim to bounce back and level the series.

In summary, New Zealand's comprehensive win showcased their batting depth and bowling strength, while Pakistan will need to regroup quickly to avoid falling behind in the series. The stage is set for an exciting second match, with both teams eager to prove their mettle on the international stage.
