New York's MoMA Celebrates Marcello Mastroianni's Legacy

Centennial retrospective highlights films and memories of the iconic Italian actor.

NEW YORK - The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is rolling out the red carpet to honor one of Italy's most beloved cinematic icons, Marcello Mastroianni, on the occasion of his centennial. The retrospective titled “Marcello and Chiara Mastroianni: A Family Affair” pays homage not just to Mastroianni's extensive body of work, but the personal connection shared with his daughter, actress Chiara Mastroianni, who curated this heartfelt tribute.

The festival showcases key films from Mastroianni's prolific career, including restored versions of timeless classics. Chiara Mastroianni, who attended the opening night, reflected on their close relationship, recalling cherished moments and underscoring her father's deep affection for the city of New York. "Mio padre amava tutto di Napoli: il cibo, la confusione e la gente. Si sentiva a casa," she remarked, illustrating the warmth and joy Marcello found not just within his home city but across the globe, especially here at MoMA.

The festival’s inaugural night featured the premiere screening of 'Le notti bianche,' directed by Luchino Visconti. This classic adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s tale has been digitally restored to 4K, allowing contemporary audiences to immerse themselves anew in Mastroianni's compelling performance. Chiara shared her sentiments on selecting this film for the occasion, noting how significant it was for her father’s legacy.

Chiara Sbarigia, president of Cinecittà, added to the celebration’s significance, stating, "Marcello e Chiara Mastroianni, Un affare di famiglia offre l'opportunità di condividere la missione di Cinecittà". This festival is not merely about showcasing films but also about preserving and celebrating the rich culture of Italian cinema—founded on three pillars: conservation, restoration, and dissemination. This mission is evidenced through the inclusion of several of Mastroianni's films, many rejuvenated to their former glory thanks to Cinecittà’s diligent restoration efforts.

Exploring the connection between Mastroianni and the city of Napoli sheds light on the nuances of his character and artistry. Chiara reminisced about her father's passion for the vibrant culture, delectable cuisine, and most of all, the kind-hearted people of Napoli. "Lui era assolutamente pazzo di Napoli - gli piaceva tutto senza eccezione," she expressed. For Marcello, Napoli represented much more than just another filming location; it was where he felt most at home.

Reflecting on what made her father essence so relatable, Chiara Mastroianni stated, "Io non ho mai distinto il papà dall’attore. Era una persona genuina, capace di essere se stesso in ogni situazione." This authenticity helped make Marcello Mastroianni not only a beloved character on screen but also a cherished figure in the hearts of many who appreciated his style and grace.

Today’s festival is more than just nostalgic—it serves as proof of how Mastroianni's work continues to resonate across generations. His performances capture the very essence of human emotion, and as his daughter expressed, they now serve as voices for the experiences of love, loneliness, and joy, reminding us of the beauty inherent to the human experience.

The celebration does more than commend Mastroianni; it spotlights the enduring tradition of Italian cinema. Respected filmmakers like Paolo Sorrentino, who are inspired by the legacy of actors like Mastroianni, continue to shape and expand this art form. The retrospectives at MoMA will continue until January 5, 2025, ensuring audiences have ample opportunity to revel in the genius of Marcello Mastroianni.

Through their efforts, MoMA not only honors the past but also reinforces the idea of cinema as a living, breathing art form—one capable of bridging time and connecting people across cultures and sensibilities. The legacy of Marcello Mastroianni remains vibrant and impactful, proving once more why he is celebrated not just as one of the greats but as an eternal icon of Italian cinema.
