New York Families Get Child Tax Credit Checks This Week

More than one million families set to receive payments as part of the Empire State Child Tax Credit program

New York families are about to receive some much-needed financial help as the state begins mailing out checks under the Empire State Child Tax Credit program. This initiative aims to distribute approximately $350 million to over one million families grappling with daily expenses, especially as back-to-school shopping kicks off. Starting this week, eligible residents can expect to see checks arriving in their mailboxes, with each check providing up to $330 per qualifying child.

On Monday, August 5, 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the commencement of these supplemental payments, emphasizing the program's objective to alleviate financial pressures on families. “We’re putting some money back in their pockets,” Hochul stated. “My team is making sure these supplemental payments reach every eligible New Yorker – and I’m going to keep working every day to address the cost of living for working parents across our state.”

To qualify for the supplemental payments, families do not need to take any action; those who received the Empire State Child Tax Credit last year will automatically be eligible. Governor Hochul described this credit as a significant tool for driving financial relief to low-income families. Affected taxpayers include married couples making up to $110,000, single parents with incomes below $75,000, and married couples filing separately with earnings under $55,000.

The amount families receive will depend on the percentage of the federal child tax credit they claimed on their 2023 New York state tax returns. Payments will range from 25% to 100% of the previous Child Tax Credit amount. Families needing more specific information on how their payment amounts are calculated can reference resources available on the state’s tax website.

Acting Tax Commissioner Amanda Hiller stated, “Supplemental payments under the Child Credit program are a proven way to drive much-needed financial relief to low-income families. We will commence the payments next week and have them completed by the end of the month – just in time for back-to-school expenses and other needs.”

Providing context, the Empire State Child Tax Credit was expanded last year to include children under the age of four. Prior to this, it exclusively covered children aged four to seventeen. This extension is pivotal, especially for newer families, making it possible for parents to benefit from financial assistance even during the early childcare years.

The initiative not only acknowledges the challenges faced by families but also represents New York's commitment to providing fiscal support to its residents where it is most needed. Each year, as families struggle with rising living costs, additional funding through programs like this becomes especially relevant.

Looking at the broader picture, many families are still coping with the economic fallout from the pandemic, witnessing inflation impacting everyday costs. Consequently, this program emerges as both timely and necessary, allowing families to use their assistance for back-to-school supplies, childcare costs, and other household necessities.

Notably, the child tax credits have been recognized for their role in reducing poverty and aiding families during challenging times. By ensuring this funding is enacted smoothly, the state is fostering financial stability among its citizens. There’s hope among lawmakers and residents alike, anticipating these payments to make significant differences as families head back to school.

Governor Hochul remarked on her determination to provide aid, highlighting the significance of these measures by saying, “Our focus is on empowering families economically, and these supplemental payments are just one way we can do it.”

For more information, New Yorkers can visit the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website, which offers detailed guidelines about the credit and instructions for eligibility. The state plans to continue mailing out checks consistently, with estimates showing over 10,000 checks dispatched daily until the entire funding is distributed.

With these developments, families can finally breathe easier knowing some financial relief is on its way, allowing parents to manage their expenses better during this busy and often financially challenging back-to-school season. This initiative is seen as more than just financial aid; it's about creating opportunities for families to thrive by relieving some of the burdens they face.
