New York City FC Names Stadium Etihad Park

Etihad Airways partners with NYCFC to create football-specific venue aimed at community engagement and economic growth

New York City FC and Etihad Airways are teaming up to create something truly special for soccer fans. The two have officially announced the name of NYCFC's upcoming stadium, which is set to be called Etihad Park. This new venue will be part of the ambitious 23-acre Willets Point redevelopment project situated in Queens, New York, and is expected to accommodate 25,000 spectators when it opens its doors in 2027.

The announcement marks the establishment of Etihad Airways as the stadium's naming rights partner through a substantial 20-year agreement. This deal connects directly to the longstanding partnership between NYCFC and the airline, which has been the team’s shirt sponsor since 2014. Brad Sims, president of NYCFC, highlighted the importance and benefit of this partnership. He stated, "Etihad has been our premier, principal, and founding partner since Day 1, and we wanted to maintain our relationship with them. It was only natural to honor our connection by naming the stadium after them."

Etihad Park stands as more than just a new home for NYCFC. It is part of the grand Willets Point regeneration effort, which aims to transform this area of Queens significantly. The development is projected to generate approximately $6.1 billion in economic activity, create around 1,550 permanent jobs, and 14,200 construction jobs. The new stadium will also feature additional amenities, including public open spaces, new affordable housing units, and community-oriented spaces like schools and hotels.

Construction is already underway at Willets Point, where site preparations are taking shape. Once completed, the stadium is set to solidify NYCFC's presence as New York’s first football-specific arena, moving the team from its current home at Yankee Stadium, where scheduling conflicts have often caused challenges. This new facility promises to offer the team greater stability and address the logistical issues they've faced playing at multi-purpose venues.

Aside from offering NYCFC a dedicated home, Etihad Park is seen as pivotal for attracting soccer fans, particularly as it looks forward to the global spotlight of the 2026 World Cup. Sims mentioned, "MLS season pass holders will gain priority access to tickets for World Cup matches," which could increase interest and membership around the club.

Looking closer at the design and function of the stadium, Etihad Park aims to celebrate community life, reminiscent of the iconic parks found throughout New York City. It will not only host soccer matches but will also serve as a venue for concerts, festivals, and various community activities, fostering connections among New Yorkers. Sims expressed his vision, stating, "We hope Etihad Park becomes a central hub for the community.”

This innovative project mirrors the feet of similar naming rights initiatives seen elsewhere, including the renowned Etihad Stadium which serves Manchester City. This helps reinforce the ties within the City Football Group, of which NYCFC is part. The idea of naming rights effectively showcases how corporate partnerships can infuse vibrancy and financial support to local teams, offering fans new and improved experiences.

The future promises to be bright for New York City FC with the impending opening of Etihad Park. The initiative encapsulates the club's vision of not just enhancing its sport profile but also investing heavily in creating vibrant community spaces. With strategic planning leading to exciting developments, NYCFC stands poised to become not only a powerhouse on the pitch but also within the heart of New York City.
