Kyoko Yoshine is set to star in the upcoming Thursday drama 'Waves, Meo and Hiyo' which will premiere on April 24, 2025, at 10:00 PM on Fuji TV. The series, which will run for an hour every week with an extended first episode, takes place in the year Showa 11, or 1936, and explores the sweet yet complicated dynamics of a newlywed couple.
Based on a beloved comic by Hachi Nishi, serialized on 'Comic DAYS' since October 2022, the show promises to deliver a heartwarming narrative filled with comedic elements and romantic twists. Alongside Yoshine, the charming actor Honoka Hiyori will be making his first regular appearance on a prime-time television drama.
The drama tells the story of the protagonist, Natsumi Ezaki (played by Yoshine), who unexpectedly becomes engaged to Tokimasa Ezaki (played by Hiyori) through an arranged marriage. However, on their wedding day, Tokimasa cannot make it due to work commitments, marking the beginning of their turbulent and heartwarming journey as husband and wife.
Yoshine expressed her excitement about portraying Natsumi, stating, "Reading the original manga, I felt that Natsumi and Tokimasa are such wonderful characters. They are cute and endearing, and I was truly moved to tears. It’s a great honor to play 'Natsumi', and I want to give it my all.”
According to Hiyori, he feels a deep honor to be part of such a prestigious Thursday drama lineup, as he has admired many series broadcasted in this slot. “I was truly happy when I received the offer. I want to fully immerse myself in this production and ensure I convey the sweetness and freshness of Natsumi and Tokimasa's relationship,” he shared.
The series is directed by Makoto Hirano, who previously helmed acclaimed dramas like 'PICU Pediatric Intensive Care Unit' (2022) and 'Surveillance Doctor Asagao' (2019). The script is penned by Yoko Izumi, known for her work on successful series such as 'I Want to Erase That Kiss' (2024) and 'Rikokatsu' (2021).
Producer Hana Song, who has worked on award-winning projects, including 'Yankee and the Weird Family' and 'The World is Made of Three', noted the fresh portrayal of life in 1936 Japan, stating, "When I first read the original, I couldn’t help but smile at the interactions between Natsumi and Tokimasa. The daily life depicted in Showa 11 offers a glimpse into an era where communication isn’t instantaneous, making the nuances of their relationship even more poignant.”
In the wake of their wedding day mishap, Natsumi and Tokimasa's story dives deep into the trials and tribulations that come with being a newly married couple in an era without modern conveniences like mobile phones. Viewers can expect moments that combine sweetness with the tenderness of their budding relationship, set against the backdrop of pre-war Japan.
Yoshine reflected on her character's challenges, saying, “In an age where communication tools like cell phones didn’t exist, the nuances of romance are distinctively different. I hope audiences will enjoy watching Natsumi as she matures and navigates through the ups and downs of this unknown world.”
As for Hiyori, he expressed the importance of capturing the essence of his character, stating, “Tokimasa may appear quiet and reserved, but I want to reveal the layers of his personality as the series progresses. It’s essential to showcase the contrast between his exterior demeanor and his inner feelings, which makes him an interesting character.”
Both leads are excited to portray their journeys and describe their characters’ dynamic love story, highlighting the sweet and sometimes comical moments that arise from their misunderstandings. They both aim to resonate with viewers through relatable experiences, as they navigate their relationship challenges.
Looking forward to the premiere, Yoshine stated, “The story weaves together a serene atmosphere with youthful romance, bringing forth a charming comedy. I hope it delivers joy and warmth to everyone watching, allowing them to look forward to Thursday nights.”
Hiyori encouraged potential viewers, “I believe this drama is sure to become a source of comfort and excitement for everyone as they follow the story from episode one.”
As the debut date draws near, both actors are hopeful that their performances will breathe life into Natsumi and Tokimasa's evolving relationship, encapsulating the essence of their era while keeping their story relatable to contemporary audiences.
